Cheats in Games

For a long time now, PC games have had quite easily accessible methods of cheating, typically from consoles, key combinations, launcher arguments and the like. I presume most of these are put in for QA departments/game testers so my question is: Why aren't they removed from, or at least trimmed down to the bare minimum in the finished product (ie: leave in console commands to fix bugs/being stuck etc?)

I'll admit it - I'm easily tempted and once I've cheated on a game, it loses its appeal and I get bored with it quickly. Victory feels a bit hollow afterwards in all honesty.

I think I'd have lasted a bit longer with a few games if I'd not got a bit frustrated and then found there was an easy way to cheat to get past the most fiendish parts. I'm not sure how others fell but I never download trainers as I simply don't trust them to not be malicious code.

What do others think? :)

Before anyone says "don't cheat then", I've tried looking for some willpower on eBay but failed. :p

EDIT: I am only referring to single player gaming here!

Dont cheat then ;)

Example: M&B Warband a while back... accidentally fell off a castle wall and into a raging group of mobs... AAARGH... CTRL+H, run, CTRL+H.

Won the battle but afterwards my game felt spoiled so I started a new character. :p

I don't understand it because cheating back in the 8-bit days was a nightmare. Either typing in a POKE or trawling through machine code with a Multiface 2. :p I think I was much more patient back then....

I have done it once or twice, but only when I have got really stuck on a certain bit that I can't get past or an object I can't find for example.

As for multiplayer games online I have never cheated as it is my number one online gaming hate!

I've never been tempted mostly. :o I used too a lot when I was very young, though I suspect that was the result of being so **** it was the only way I'd ever progress.

If I use cheats now, I don't get any satisfaction from the game. I don't get the point in playing if it's not actually me playing I guess. There's great satisfaction in beating a level or section after being stuck on it for a while, where there's none to be had from artificially skipping it.

I think the only thing I've used cheats for in the last decade or so is to just muck about after completing a game.

Edited my original post - I was only talking about single player. :D

For really difficult bits, I think I'd rather more games had an optional "hints" system that kicked in after a few dozen failures or a certain amount of time stuck on a section.

I tend to only cheat if I get really frustrated, and can't get past a certain section... at the point where it's annoying me because I can't.

There's only been 1 or 2 puzzles within Skyrim where I've looked online for the answer (technically cheating) but I feel that's improved my game, so that I could continue enjoying it.

As for god mode, unlimited ammo, or all weapon cheats.... got no interest in them at all.

Oh, one other thing I did was modify the Crysis difficulty files so you could carry more than 2 main weapons. I mean really, a super-high tech nano suit and he can only carry 1 gun in his arm, 1 on the back and a pistol strapped to the thigh? I CAN CARRY THAT! lol

No clipping on doom. Used that so much I knew it offhand for years. Saved a lot of time wasted redoing a hard level

Its there for QA, a bug costs them millions or it used to. Now they can just alter it with patches. I used a cheat for the final mission of GTA 4 because it was silly, also Driver the last mission was pointless otherwise I'd leave the game alone

Quicksave/quickload ruined a few games for me. I'd just end up walking around with full ammo/health all the time saving every few seconds and quickloading if i used 1 bullet too many or if something scratched me. Was totally anal. Banned myself from using quicksave - got back to having fun :D

I must admit that Quicksave has spoiled gaming a fair bit for me. I must QS hundreds of times in a session. :/ If you think about the save system of Dead Space, it makes things a lot more intense. :)

There is the benefit of being able to put the game down whenever you want with QS though.

if you got stuck on the chopper bit I found the best thing to do was to fly as high as possible above the boat (keeping it close on the radar) and just wait for him to use his auto-aim rocket {cutscene} and onto the next bit :D

CS is all about the lag, the biggest advantage is from having exactly right setting for that one server. Legal cheat!

if you got stuck on the chopper bit

It was fine upto getting on the bike. Just not a fan of repeating a mission twenty times right from the start, I dont rank it as skill. GTA did allow mission failure a bit I think ? The best game would be totally dynamic

I have the cheat terminal mod in Fallout NV but only use it if a key bugs during a quest and I don't get it. It's very frustrating when it bugs and you haven't saved for a while.
