I'll always run through first without cheats but sometimes I like to go back to a game explore, etc. and use the cheats to bypass bits that are purely grind/tricky to perfect and I've already completed them once and just want to experience the game more casually.
For me cheats add another level of re-playability.
The problem is when people cheat on competitive online games (FPS's/mmo's etc)
Simple fix is to not cheat if you don't like it.
but i love using cheats/mods on single player games or multiplayer instances where it affects no one elses progression or fun GTA for example, inviting your mates on a closed free roam map was more fun with cheats/mods than without.
I know exactly what you mean about the game losing its appeal. At the same time however there are situations which might require the use of cheats and might not even be because they are difficult but rather problematic because of the game mechanics itself being flawed. Its not that many and one example I could only think of at the moment is Jagged Alliance 2. My in-game income from mines there is made to diminish quite fast so that the game can only last for a certain period of time so I used the money cheat just as much to replace it and experience an alternative, longer game(I have already finished the game without cheats a few times anyway).
Free roam games need cheats. I tend to complete them cheat free, then have fun with the cheats once I've completed the game, adds a bit more fun once you're done with them.
Th simple trainer for GTA is great, but it isn't a thing put in by devs , but it does make the game a hell of a lot more fun, especially online!
