Check-in suspended at £4.3bn T5

Oh Nooo :( Earlier I booked my ticket to St Petersburg for next Friday with British Airways.......T5  I PRAY to god that these teething issues are all fixed.

What, Big Bird?

Hopefully. :D
Yes, that does bear all the hallmarks of something that could be an unmitigated disaster....
I'm still going to stick with my previous principles and hope it isn't. I don't think the government could afford to let that happen. Ridiculed on national TV in front of a billion people with several billion more apt to find out? I don't think so.

If there's a risk of that happening, they'll just have to throw money at it and make it go away.

Having said that, how quickly people forget that we did the Commonwealth Games and that was a big success. Many of the same team are likely to be involved with the Olympics.

Why did they have to start running the terminal at full capacity from day 1? Surely they could have brought stuff over gradualy and spotted problems as they arose.

Oh well another reason to avoid Heathrow.

I'm also hoping that it goes off without a hitch. I just won't be overly shocked if they do hit trouble in the run-up to it.

Very true. Having said that - the Commonwealth Games were held in Manchester, not London. That alone made the probability of success at least 10000% higher :)

There really is no way of testing the kind of throughput an airport like Heathrow gets...

Yes there is.

The issue is a big bag rather than progressive rollout. Business wants a single date to PR about, in reality they should have started with one set of flights and moved over gradually if they wanted to run tests in the field!

There are many ways to approach this.. depending on view and drivers.

Having said all that, I now fly to Egypt for work with KLM via Amsterdam and get a car from Cairo to Alexandria rather than fly with BA direct to Alexandria via Heathrow. I told my boss I didn't want to fly with BA through Heathrow any more after they had misplaced my luggage for the fourth time in 12 months. BA are the worst airline in the world for baggage and Heathrow is the worst airport in the world for baggage. Put the two together and you have a recipe for disaster.

Haha, I've had the same expected. Arrived at Sydney from Heathrow to find my bags were a day behind me. I don't think Ozzy Customs understand "My bags are arriving tomorrow!". Kept questioning me why I come all this way with no bags :s

Also worth mentioning is that the big problem with baggage handling at Heathrow that Other airports do not experience is the amount of people that are only there to re connect. A mass amount of people/baggage is hanging around the terminal/baggage system waiting for the persons next flight rather than spat straight out the system for pick up. Some bags can be going around the system for up to 6 hours which is why the new system has an inbuilt auto storage facility.
It truly is a work of engineering genius & i really wish them well in getting it up & running properly & showing that we still have some mighty fine engineers working on major projects in this country.

That's the problem!

It's been an absolute dump of a place for as long as I can remember. Aberdeen Airport used to be bad, but at least they've improved the place in the past couple of years.

Only place that I've been to that comes remotely close to Heathrow is Madrid.

I was at Madrid last year and thought it was a great airport, modern, spacious, no queues, great transport system and plenty of space, infact, one of the best airports I've been too!

Best airport I've been through so far is Schiphol. Well laid out, plenty of amenities and well run. If I had to get stuck at an airport, I'd rather it was Schiphol than Heathrow.

Changi Airport in Singapore For The Win... Schipol is nice, and better than most, but Changi Airport roxors... :D

All I see at Gatwick is scores of those information people in the yellow jumpers who just seem to hand out plastic zip bags for taking liquids onboard, they get paid pretty highly aswell, and seem to stand around chatting to each other all day.

Wasn't it in fact designed by a British architect ? I seem to recall seeing a show regarding various grand designs and this came up I'm sure of it!
Terminal 4 was yes, and is very nice.. (A bit like Kuala Lumpar's airport, but not as nice, so I don't know if it's the same designer or anything)... The other three terminals are much like LHR T1-3 though. :(
