i might be buying this week, before Wednesday, so any suggestions with this spec would be appreciated.
I've already got the case, antec 1200 and the psu, corsair tx850W, and dvd writer. The budget was 1000, but ive managed to get things down to 700.
For the gpu i was thinking of the geforce 285, but would the 4870 be as good? i might be upgrading to a 24" monitor later on in the year so would it be worth buying a higher end gpu?

Thanks in advance :)

Intel I7 920 OEM - £229.99
Asus P6T X58 - £209.29
XFX ATI 4870 1GB - £164.99
OCZ 6GB DDR3 - £68.99
Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler - £57.59
Western Digital Caviar Blue 320GB - £41.39

Total: £783.63

i cant recommend The 4870 enough. i have the 4870X2 version and since the new drivers its a great card so the 4870 should be a nice little top ender. you would be able to play anything on high settings BUT if you have the cash then go for the 4870X2.

you should be expecting to top 18,000 - 19,000 on 3d mark06 single GPU card & 21,000+ with a X2 by my guess and it just a guess.

Looks good to me mate. I have the same CPU, motherboard and memory combo and it seems to me the best bang for buck @ £500. Running nicely @ 3.8ghz, with the RAM @ 1550mhz!!!

Certainly don't bother with a 285 - it's 10-20% faster than a 4870 1GB and twice the price! If you've got spare cash, why not buy two 4870 1GBs? :D

Have you had any problems with the OCZ ram and the Asus mobo?

Nope, nothing. Took a couple of attempts to boot, but not sure what that was. RAM overclocks like a dream too - the OCUK chaps have had it at 1800mhz stock timings!!! :D

Go with the 4870, when you get a new monitor if you are struggling (which I doubt you will) you can always whack in another card :D

Also, I'd go with a Sammy F1 drive over the WD blue... Maybe two for a RAID0 setup :D

I take it also that you already have some storage drives?

I havent got any storage yet, im buying something small and cheap which will do me until i get some more money for a bigger hdd

kinda torn between the 4870 and 4870X2 now :(

When you have 2 HDD's go into BIOS and select configure as RAID option, than as it boots for first time hit ctrl + I, that will take you to RAID setup screen, where you can choose between RAID1 and RAID0

for gaming that 4870 will be rubbish paired with the i7. The i7 is so powerful that even gtx 280 in sli bottlenecks it, a 4870 / i7 will be slower than a c2d with a 4870 but 4870 x2 or cf will be double as fast as with just 1.

im leaning towards the 4870X2 but im thinking its a bit of an overkill if only playing it at 1920 x 1080, or is that all good? plus i might be going up to 24" later on..

what does bottleneck mean? sorry :p

bottleneck is basically whatever the slowest part of the computer is, the whole computer can only go as fast as the slowest part, so whatever the nottleneck is is the limiting factor in the PC, its normally the GPU when it comes to games
