The last time i built a system was nearly 6 years ago now, so to say im out of the loop is an understatement, i have been reading these forums for months trying to see what works well, what people are saying etc etc, there are still some parts i need but hopefully the knowledge from the community here can fill in the blanks.

So far

EVGA GeForce GTX 680 Classified 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card

Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail

Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

Intel 520 Series 180GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive - Retail

Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

I went with the low profile RAM as im not sure there will be clearance with a cooler on there,

I have seen where they say dont use the Intel cooler and get another one, but which one is good for this board etc,

I was planning on i7 but after reading the forums ( this comp is primary gaming ) the i5 3570k was recommended, i have no used a Gigabyte board in at least 10 years, ( last time wasnt so good ) but the 1 i picked is recommended.

So, what i need,

CPU cooler

/doh there are 1000's to pick from.

Case,

I was looking at the Lian Li PC-V2120X but as its out of stock i may go elsewhere or pick another, the comp will be air cooled, does anyone use this case etc, what is a good case, i dont want a window in the case.

PSU,

There are like 100's to pick from which 1, i dont want something that will blow up when the comp needs the power for gaming.

Monitor,

I was looking at the U2711, ( which is why i picked the GFX card that i did ) i may go with the U2410 for now and upgrade later, the 120Hz 3d are no good for me, as i have eye sight issues and 3D does not work for me at all.

Sound,

Is the onboard sound any good these days, last time i used on board sound there was like a low pitched noise coming threw the headset all the time, so i switched to Audigy 2, but its kinda out dated now.

This will be running Win 7 64bit

Did i miss anything out,

Input would be great,

Thanks.

PS: this system will not be overclocked, i have no need for overclocking these days.

- Have to agree with these guys. PC-V2120X is not worth it for a box that sits on the floor.

- 16Gb is unnecessary for gaming.

- Most onboard sound solutions are good enough unless you have expensive output equipment. A card can be bought cheaply later if you're unsatisfied.

- A 4Gb 680 is pretty overkill for a single screen system at this point in time. A 2Gb 670 is better value unless you are intent on over spending to be at the top.

- 120Hz is good. You don't have to use '3D'. The very nature of 120Hz means they're the best for gaming right now.

- PSU? 650W+ Corsair or Seasonic. Some others are OK. Other people can chime in here.

- Cooler? If you're not overclocking the retail stock cooler is enough. You can't go massively wrong unless you have specific requirements.

Those parts are all decent enough but most people would sub out the Intel SSD for a Samsung 830/Crucial M4 256Gb.

The onboard sound solution of the Z77X-UD5H uses the better Realtek ALC898 which features Creative X-Fi emulation.

comparing a corsair case with lianli should activate some robot dog that eats one of ur legs or something
i dont think the 800d is good looking ><

I'm a Lian li owner (read the sig), and yes, they are better but if it save me £130 odd. I'll be over at corsair towers (they live there right). :)

Stu's thoughts,

£239 for a 800D, are you mad? its not that great for air cooling.

There are loads to pick from both similar in price and cheaper that offer better air flow.

I agree there are better cases out there, for instance I prefer the Switch 810 after seeing some reviews and its £100 cheaper!

hehe thermaltake rly have got designing ugly cases down to a fine art
their whole range is super ugly wth!

FT02 is a great case, main reason id never have one is the weight, id like something i can lift without injuring myself
great looking, great airflow, top ports makes sense to me
its a sit on floor and forget about it case
buy in silver :)

i think 3 180s is too much but wotever...

I have always wondered why people would even consider going EVGA. From everywhere I have read they are Noisy and Have very poor cooling. Why not go MSI/Gigabyte. Something with a non reference - like cooler.

If you can explain to me why EVGA is a good choice I would be Interested in knowing :D

To be honest, some of the reviews i read said it was a good card, and there warrently is supposed to be great, ive never personally owned one,

Would this be better

Ive never owned an MSI card either, so i dont know, i do know that the 4gb of ram is kinda of nice for running the high res that comes with the 27" monitors.

As for the case, its going to come down to personal choice, the Lian Li case is expensive, but is it any good for cooling/air flow?
