Not sure about the graphics card or CPU, but how long would this system last me in terms of years?

Primary use would be gaming and web browsing bit of work etc.

Thanks

Well, with Conroe coming out soon, you could wait. However, the system you have chosen will certainly last a while.

X1800XT's are the best value for money at the moment... the system is great for the money in terms of CPU and GPU.

Ditch the hiper and go for the Enermax 500 Liberty.

I have both, althou the hiper has given me reliable serive the past year. I just swapped it round yesterday, and i am loving this Enermax Liberty. The Enermax have tighter rails, quieter and all round bettery built quality. You can see it by just looking at it. The liberty also have fan monitor connection which the Hiper doesn't have, Also the cables in the Liberty is also a little bit longer too if your case is big, I actually use less cables than the Hiper (3 now, instead of 5), to power 3 HD, 2 DVDRW, GFX, floppy. The case is tidier because of it.

What i miss is the blue light thou, and the toolkit case the Hiper comes in is nice as well.

Im finding it too hard to wait! I probably cant afford conroe as it is. Would it play most games high?
EDIT: i forgot to mention i was thinking about a 3800 venice as well, is that worse or better than the 3700sd?

3700 = 1MB of cache... so probablly better.

The bargin at the moment is probablly the venice 3000... I have owned one for about a year, and mine is clocked to 2.75GHZ.... great for a a chip that now costs 60 or so. I would recommend you either get one of them, and then in a few months grab a x2 3800, or if you are never going to multi task, just grab the single core 3700.

To be fair I think you will be better off getting the Pentium IV 805 Dual Core CPU and overclocking it. As games are starting to take advantage of Dual Core technology.

Just my 2 cents.

I was thinking about that as well a few weeks ago, but now i have ruled it out due to the temps of the chips, the power they consume and the price of the motherboards and DDR2.

I have heard many people say "new games will start to utilise dual cores", what would this mean for people with single cores? Would it just mean they wouldn't run the game very well?

I think you have the wrong end of the stick with Dual Core... First of all the temps aren't a problem. My X2 4400+ is running full wack [F@H both cores] and its sat at a nice 45C.

They will always of course draw a bit more power, but I do not believe it to be that significant. Pricing for DC is great and stands to get even better. You don't require DDR2 RAM either.

Games with Dual Core optimisations shouldn't run badly on single core chips at all. Developers will just write the game so that it takes advantage of both cores. If only one is present - nevermind.

Eventually the vast majority of CPUs are going to be dual core anyway but thats not going to happen overnight. Single core aint quite dead yet.

I would seriously recommend you wait. News from DailyTech is that on Conroe launch (a matter of weeks now), AMD are going to slash prices on Athlon64 and AthlonX2 processors. The Athlon64 X2 3800+ could drop to as low as £99!

I'm not talking about AMD dual cores, im talking about Intel dual cores(the 805D, to be specific) which runs very hot and uses a crapload of power.

It will be intresting to see how much prices come down though..

Indeed! Dual core X2 3800+ might be as cheap as the 3700+ SD or even cheaper.

I didn't want to wait any longer and got the 3500+ am2. My thinking is that in six months I'll get a high end X2 for a reduced price. The 3500+ and X1800 XT I got is running everything I have installed at full details without any slowdown so I don't feel I'm missing out in any way at the moment. Just all down to how long you can wait but you can keep waiting for the next tech to come along and never make the purchase.

also depends if you can afford to get another cpu in such short a time.

Well to be honest it's not going to be an expensive upgrade. In six months time I reckon I'll be able to pick up a pretty decent A64 X2 AM2 for around £90. The 3500+ AM2 was £80 and I will probably sell for at least £40 in a few months time so the deficit isn't too bad. Plus, I've had my pc and been using it instead of weeks or month's of waiting to order.
