Trying to stay healthily under the £500 mark. (so want to avoid £499!) Mainly for playing games (Crysis finally!), Audio encoding and possibly some 3D CAD software.

got an OS, and can sort a DVD rom from somewhere, and going to be using a 27" samsung lcd tv (1368x768) from a few years back. I want to overclock but nothing major, I think the motherboard I've chosen is a good shout and should support some of the next AMD chips to come out nxt year i think....? Oh yeah and getting a 500W PSU of a friend.

Im not sure its worth it, I mean look at this:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/175?vs=156

Fair enough it does have a small lead in some games but this is when they're both pushing a lot of fps anyway. The 4890 actually has a slightly better minimum fps on the crysis tests which I reckon is a better comparison of in game playability.

Would I not see a benefit of 6gb/s sata for a mix of uses?

I'm gessing what the 460 offers for the extra £ is DX11, is that the appeal?

A few thoughts....

Firstly the new ati cards are due soon (october i believe). May pay to wait and see what falls into your £100ish gfx card budget. Even the current card you want may drop in price a fair degree to clear them from stock.

Also i've seen the phenom ii X4 955 (revision C2) going for £100 odd quid. Worth an extra £20 I reckon for the better, higher clocked cpu with L3 cache. (Of course check that revision/wattage cpu is compatible with the mobo)

I'd agree with stulid about getting a sata 3 drive. A spinpoint F3 1TB example should cost around the same but double your capacity and still have good performance.

Good luck with the build hope it goes well
