Was trying to work out what my current rig PSU should be, so came across this program, http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

I have a 400Watt PSU for my current system:

AMD Althon 64 x2 4800
3GB DDR RAM
120 GB 7200 HD
300 GB 7200 HD
7900 GTX
4 FANS
3 USB Devices
Floppy Drive
DVD-R Drive

That calculator said i require a 414 watt PSU!!! Then i checked if i had bought the correct PSU for my new build, i have bought a 520 watt PSU for

C2D Q6600 (will be OC to 3.4)
4GB DDR2 RAM
500 7200 SATA HD
7800 GT
4 FANS
3 USB Devices
DVD-R SATA

it told me that i require a 618 Watt PSU. Surely this calculator is way off, well im hoping it is??? What results do you get??

This was the calculator referred to by an Antec Tech on this foruma while ago. I think my opty 165, 7800GT, 2x Sata, 1 x pata and 2 opticals came in about 430W, seemed OK to me, if a little OTT.

Bear in mind these calculators give the result based on every single component using maximum power all at the same time.

It's quite unlikely this will happen - for example when loading a map from HDD/DVD in a game, the CPU/GFX won't be running at 100%, and once you're in the game, the HDD/DVD will rarely be used, so it all kind of balances out a bit.

Mine says 303W and overclock thingy says 170W, I dunno weird. 600W Spire Rocketeer here and works perfectly :)

The recommended total Power Supply Wattage gives you a general idea on what to look for BUT it is NOT a crucial factor in power supply selection! Total Amperage Available on the +12V Rail(s) is the most important, followed by the +5V amperage and then the +3.3V amperage.

Ok, I've looked it up for my PSU, says 21Ampere, is that good or not so good for 12v rail? :)

In general would not rely on - but useful as a guide .
Put current specs through and it advised needed 414w psu - am using a hiper 580 w and not been any problems BUT glad to here that 'officially' it's good:rolleyes:

Well i call BS on it, as it states that going from a stock q6600 to an OC @ 3.4, it requires an extra 169 watts!!!, That cant be right can it??

I've just been onto the site and it says a 715W for mine and i'm currenlty using my trusty enermax 465W. Definatley a bit of overkill I think.

Maybe its fine as a guide for the generic 20 quid PSU's you buy for the local pc shop which we all know never measure up against the quality PSU's we put in our rigs lol

going by some of the replies maybe :D

None of the PSU calculators are every really that good though, just think of them as a guide and take the number with a pinch of salt, if the PSU you have works then don't worry about it.
