I went and did a silly thing didn't I :(

I'm not long back in the country and thought I'd take the car for a good spin. In fact I wanted some new oil and filters so I was on my way to the autofactors when I thought I better fill my screen wash up at the services (what with this bad weather). After filling it up I shut the bonnet and without checking the catch is engaged I drive off down the carriageway.

Well you guessed it, at 60mph the force of the wind literally whipped my bonnet right up and bent it back with such force it smashed on the windscreen leaving me driving blind. To say I was shocked was an understatement. I managed to pull over safely out of the path of other cars. I wrenched the bonnet back down to find the windscreen has some almighty cracks and some small dents are in the roof. The bonnet catch had rusted and didn't engage properly! The bonnet is trashed, but I guess it's good no one was hurt.

So here is a tip for you - ALWAYS CHECK YOUR BONNET LATCH. :p

Honda Prelude = big long bonnet = Almight BANG = ME

I'd post pics but I woke up this morning to find the car covered in snow :p

I've noticed mine moving a lot at the front corners which has worried me so I always double checl it's down! Doesn't suprise me it's flung up if the latch failed - it is a big bonnet

Nice car, that's a shame.

My Clio was recalled for this a while back, or at least a similar problem. Hence the people asking.

Gutting!

My 5th gen prelude failed to close last week, after I had checked the oil level before a long journey.
The thing would not fully latch. It was on the safety latch, but would not clamp down. So i had to fiddle about with it till the catch loosened up and closed up. It was just clogged up and dirty. Need to get around to cleaning it properly soon. Might do it sooner rather than later now :P

Ouch!!!

Your lucky that didn't cause you an accident. The other week i was out in the car and had forgotten to quite tighten up drivers wiper arm as tight as it should be when i had it off.

overtook a RM lorry on the outside lane and as i've whooshed passed the wind/rain force snapped the arm back and it started to flap about my drivers side window!! lol i cacked it.

had to try and stick my neck over to passangers side to see out of windscreen, glided it into a service station/sliproad that couldn't have been any better placed for me if it tried. had socket/spanners in boot, back into position, tighten up, drove off :p

Gutted, looked lovely aswell. Hope you get it fixed soon!

This happened to me before in a van, on the outside lane of the motorway, at about 80ish. Crapped myself, driver done well to see though and get us in the hard shoulder though.

happened to a guy i know with an r33 gtr, at 160mph odd, caved the roof in. the latch had been pulled out of the slam panel

I really advise you do sooner. I was so angry with myself because it could have easily been avoided. Now I've to wait for the windscreen to be replaced which should be today but looking at the snow I doubt it now. I'm very fortunate that a guy on a prelude forum should want to be rid of his bonnet so I get a replacement for free! I figured the insurance would probably call it a write off and I don't want that and lose my NCB so I'm fixing it myself - the only major expense being the respray. Could be worse I guess.

Oh and that latch - I've given it a good scrub and blast with some spring ease spray and it's fine now

Hope you get it sorted asap. I always liked the sparkle yellow, was one of the colours I was considering when I got my blue one :)

If it were me, I would see it as a perfect excuse to get a carbon bonnet :D

Thanks :)

I was looking at CF bonnets but after seeing my mates fitment (it was terrible) I was a little put off. I guess you pay for what you get? I have now been offered a 2nd hand one for free because this guy wants the space in his garage so I'm going to rip is hand off.
