Just a brief message to recommend that if you have a spare 5 minutes this weekend and the weather isn't too bad grab your socket set or such and check your wheel nuts.

Just been chatting to a customer whose wheel came off of their VW Transporter Camper.

Fortunately the van isn't really damaged and more fortunately the wheel bounced over a hedge into a field. If it had hit a car or pedestrian it would be a different story!

Unsure if nuts can realistically work loose over time but has to be worth a 5 minute check and often overlooked when checking fluid levels etc.
:)

One came off an old 306 of mine, the tyre place never done it up properly.
Was going round a corner aswell, was a little scary, managed to get it back on and took a nut out of each wheel, to get it home from bournmouth.

On the subject of nuts

Anyone know of a torque wrench that doesn't cost a fortune, just for doing wheel nuts

I was in a cab once (those ones who drop their cards in your mail slot) when the wheel came off the back left on the A1 at around 60mph, VW passat. Car veered to the right and drifted left, ended up smacking into the curb and losing the rear axle completely. Never heard the outcome and was released that night as i was ok just shook up, mate with me had a broken collar bone. I was semi-drunk but i honestly thought that was the end of it all that moment. Driver was fine as well.

Reminds me when I was driving along the M8 about to overtake a council lorry when the front driver side wheel fell off and rolled in front of me onto the central reservation. The sparks were awesome.

When I bought my Golf.. about 2 weeks into owning it I was driving home and felt some almighty vibration coming in, worse when turning, steadied it home fearing the worst.. was gonna nurse it to the garage the next morning but thought best check the tyres and wheel nuts first and all FIVE front passenger nuts inc. the locker were loose!

Couldn't believe it, all torqued up to factory spec and been fine since lol.

Lost one of my locking wheel nuts, guess the tyre place didnt torque it up quite tight enough as the other three were also a bit slack. My fault for not checking!

Now I check them each month as shelling out £24 for a new set of locking nuts isn't much fun!

Dad got his tyres changed and and the next day he drove to Stafford to look at the car i was going to buy (2 years ago) on the drive back just has he came off the motorway his wheel half fell off, still attatch by 1 nut i think D:

would have been a lot worse had it happened on the motorway.

Happened to me, luckily I noticed the noise. Quite obvious clunking noise tbh. Was just about off as well.
