I am looking at a net book that will not go into Windows (version 7). It gives you a screen that says windows is loading files and then gives you an error message that says

"windows failed to start etc

Status: 0xc0000185
Info: the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.

We are also asked to put windows disc and choose repair.

The net book doesn't have a DVD drive.

Is there anyway we can run a hard drive checking program from USB? I mean using the USB boot option like you would to install windows via USB

Also when we plug a USB pen drive in the BIOS it lists it twice in the boot options

1) UEFI: chipbank SD/M...

2) ChipbankSD/MM Read....

The other 2 book options are

3 ) Windows boot Manag....

and

4) Realtek PXE B03 D00

Which option out of the 4 boot options should be choose if we try and reinstall windows from USB?

1 & 2 look like the same integrated card reader.

You should see the HDD and USB drive in the BIOS, as long as the HDD isn't faulty.

I've seen a few laptops recently that have had the hard disk and dvd drive as the only options to boot from. However on these laptops there has been an option to add additional devices to the boot order such as usb boot, network boot etc. Check that if you can access the netbooks bios.

Western Digital's dos hard drive diagnostic has instructions on creating a usb boot disk for this - see here http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=608&sid=2&lang=en
