Checking if a house has a phone line?

Well you're paying the £12 for line rental and they automatically put you on a base phone plan. For me it's M which is just weekend calls. You don't have to get a phone though, if you're worried about people ringing up mobiles from it.

Most ISP will do that.

So who are you with then may I ask? Apologies, it's been a long day :(

I was with Demon due to the unlimited download usage, but their tariff plus the line rental puts its to well over £30 :(

I'm with Virgin in Aber.

£35 a month for Broadband XL & Phone M (weekend) & Line rental

Because I'm in a student house there are 7 of us in total so we needed the unlimited package. The other two packages which are L (40GB) and M (10GB) and that would be too little for us lot.

The previous tenants had BT broadband with phone and stuff, and luckily we didn't have to be charged a silly high re-connection fee or anything like that.

Ah okay thanks

Just checked the BT site, and its £12 a month to set up a phone number and activate the line again, thats an unlimited weekend call plan.

Then I'd have to look at a broadband package, shame my demon one was £25 a month =/ otherwise I'd do that...

I would like to have unlimited download usage as I use demand five etc as well as game every so often, along with radio streaming and the like...Theres also three of us in the house, so think its best if i try and get something similar :)

None of em.
not true !!!

you can get virgin broadband with no phoneline and no line rental. im on it right now and was on it in my old house.

just check that its in a cable area

on the site click the broadband you want and then when it gives you the 2 options click ''without a phoneline'' the 10mb is £15 at the moment for first 3 months then 20 after. that will be the only cost.

it gets cut down to 3mb in primetimes after you go over the limit but its still fine for streaming and gaming etc. always get the best latency on cable too !

Rite, its £20 a month for the 10mb now with no phone line......Hm

I've heard Virgin can be a bugger to cancel in the long run? True or?

Might be worth going with Virgin as long as its reliable in the area...but i have no idea if it will be =/

EDIT: Cut down? According to the site that should be unlimited? ie no limit

GAH!!! When I goto checkout (for testing) it asks for the postcode then says I'm not in the fibre optic zone? Then says I need to look at the other packages which are not just the broadband =/...ugh :(

What's the exchange you'll be using?

Like I said line rental is usually around the same price from ISP. They will probably say it's lower than BTs.

Same here. The website clearly states this also. I've had broadband only off them for almost 4 years. I do get a letter once a month offering me medium TV and phone line for about £4 or something but it's pretty much the same as freeview and I have no use for a landline at all.

No idea? Any way to find out? I don't think I'll be able to get the no phone line option? Is that for Fibre only? =/ Site makes no sense as I think I HAVE to have a phone line

BT line rental is £10.04 if you go for paper-less billing and pay with direct debit

Also, BT frequently do free line install deals, so always call and ask first. (If not it's £124.99)

Have a look at: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/deals/free-BT-line-installation#free

Whack in your postcode and it'll tell you which exchange you're covered by.

Oh? Didnt get the option when I looked last night for paperless billing

According to the BT site if I have a BT socket at the front then I can get it working without the install fee...Just got to decide who to go with :(

I've updated that link, to take you to the free line install page ;)

On the subject of ISPs, always go with a LLU provider. The speeds are generally better, and it's cheaper.

Set up your phone line ASAP is my advice, or at least get the ball rolling with BT.

I made the mistake of waiting until I moved in before sorting out a new phone line. BT gave me a 3-week gap between ordering and the 'switch-on' date. Then when that date came, I got a call to say they can't activate due to an existing line, and that it will be another two weeks as they give ample notice to disconnect the current service. Quite annoying.

Anyway, once the phone line is finally activated (fingers crossed) on the 28th, I then have to set up a broadband account. I've been without internet for over a month now, and it's getting to me! Will be at last another 3 weeks yet I suppose...

O2 broadband is superb, and if you have an O2 contract incredibly cheap. Just make sure using samknows that you are on an LLU exchange. If not, dont get O2 as its hopeless when its not LLu.
