Ive noticed that the price of Jeep Cherokee's is next to nothing - Are they rubbish?

Seen loads that have been LPG'd and they would suit me for lugging my bikes around. I toyed with the idea of getting some kind of truck a few months ago but nothing happened.

Anyone got any experience with them ? They all seem to be 4.0 litre, decent engine?

Ive been to look round them before and they seemed pretty good actually. All be it in an American sort of way. Think they are ok, cheap just in same way all American stuff is. They have decent enough interiors, usually full leather. I would rate them somewhere similar to a Disco tbh. We ended up getting a Land Rover 110 V8 instead tho.

No it isn't becuase the cheap Cherokees are exempt from the higher level of taxation.

In that case its because people like me assume they are at the higher level of taxation then. :p. Seriously.

Have a look here. I bought mine in January and its great tbh. Very American - brick like looks, tonka build quality and parts cheaper than fresh air.

As you read from my thread above, we drove it 200 miles with pretty much no transmission fluid and its still going strong now.

I bought mine to carry all my RC racing gear back and for to the track. Its current duty is the same as what you mention - bikes. We put 2 17.5" MTBs in the back and our daughters smaller bike and they go in with the seats down no problem. I will be getting a rear rack though.

Because the bikes will be hanging off the back, I've bought rear leafs for a diesel Cherokee (£100 2nd hand). They are stronger and about 1" higher (had to buy pucks to raise the front to make it sit level) I've got that to fit plus a new belt and new front discs/pads £60. Also think it needs an NS front roll bar bush but nothing serious.

The rear leafs let go on Petrols hence why many change to diesel. Some say the rear diffs are weak but its actually caused by the leaf springs. The rear sags which changes the angle of the prop which actually pushes into the diff which makes the diff wear quicker.

I pay about the same to tax my Jeep as I do my Golf :D Insurance is £250! Only recently noticed it has heated front mirrors too - which is nice. Mine isn't LPG and it does drink fuel but I don't do that many miles. I would pay for the conversion because it'll turn 20mpg into 40mpg (monetary speaking) but I want multipoint injection system and under chassis tanks which costs more.

If you read the thread, I'm now liking the pimped look. It looks a bit ***** and people leave you alone/move out of your way etc :)

I paid £1500 which is quite expensive but mine was 66K when I bought it (its now 70K) and the history backs that up. It had a tow ball but no electrics to it so I don't think its done much towing so the rear doesn't really sag.

Diesel are more expensive but the engine is apparently rubbish. A few people have said that these things were sent near enough flat pack from the US to Austria and built there.
I would say £12-1700 for a LPG low ish miles Orvis would be about right. Orvis were top of the range jobs.

Over budget but the same model as mine. Interior is far cleaner than mine though.

Cheapies

Decent ones seem to have gone up in price. Theres a forum that might be of use birtydastardsjeepclub.com.

Yea, it has to be a certified install if you want someone to insure it...

I had one too - 4.0 Limited, bought it with 3 months T&T for a whopping 350 quid. Real nice machine to barge along in :D Made a good noise and had a fair turn of pace as well, the straight six is a nice motor with a good heft. That was with a new towball, towbar, load tray and dog guard :D

You really don't get much more for the money.......Everything worked spot on, drove perfectly and used no fluids.

No wear to the driver's leather either which was remarkable!

Pretty bulletproof as well by all accounts and easy to eek a few extra MPG out of them (better electric fans, ignition, filter etc). Mine wasn't actually that unreasonable on fuel either, was mostly just sitting on cruise on the motorway floating along.

Decent spec as always - central locking, air con, cruise, electric seats, selectable part/full time 4WD, electric windows, mirrors, cup holders, power steering, ABS and so on.

Comfortable too!

Look for rust under the rear seats, where all the crud collects on the chassis. Other than that, just the usual. The engines are nigh on indestructible.

4.0's the one to have, regardless :D

They're cheap because people think they cost a fortune to maintain, are impossible to get parts for and suffer absolutely horrendous economy. None of which are true.
