Cheque clearing

How long does it normally take for a cheque to clear into your account?

I'm buying a new car which meant closing a savings account and moving the money to my current account with another bank.

Halifax made a complete mess with this, in the end they gave me a cheque which I took to Barclays, I thought this would clear in 3 days or something, the guy tells me it will be cleared by a week Tuesday 8th). I need the money by next Saturday (5th). I was hoping to go in Friday afternoon and get a bankers draft made out so I could collect my car on Saturday.

Is there any chance it will be cleared by then?

Some banks take 5 working days which I assume Barclays do if you've been told a week on Tuesday.

What car are you getting?

EDIT: Barclays website says 4 working days to clear so you might be ok.

Usually 3-5 days i think... but years ago when i worked for HSBC i was told to say it could be up to 7.

Another Saab 9-5 Aero if the money clears in time.

It's newer than my old one with a few extra's on it. I owned one for a year but the engine went after playing with the ECU. This one is a 2005, it has vented air conditioned seats, really looking forward to that on hot sticky summer days
