How would you pay tradesmen without cheques? Unless you keep massive amounts of cash around I don't see any alternatives at the moment.

Debit card, when cheques are eventually phased out people will have means of inputting cards into their phone ( thare's an app for that

) to make instant payments.

I expect we will just see more mobile chip and pin machines for the likes of people like me, which would be more convenient actually.

what advantage is there to phasing them out though? If people want to use them let them, surely?
