CHILDREN at a primary school in Annahilt have been banned from running in their playground, a DUP MLA has claimed.

Lagan Valley Assembly member Jonathan Craig discovered the controversial move because two of his children attend the school.

He has further claimed that this is not the only school to ban running, through his work as a member of the education committee, he said that he has discovered a similar ban has been brought into a number of other schools across Northern Ireland.

Mr Craig slammed the bans as "health and safety regulations being taken too far" and has vowed to raise the issue at the education committee.

"Part of being a child is playing, running and generally having fun," he told the News Letter.

Children shouldnt be out running around having fun. They should be in studying how great the EU is.

people are so scared about being sued, its got nothing to do with health and safety.

The goverment need to bring in regulations to make it the responsiblity of the claimenent if they get injured in an act like sports etc.

Crazy :(
Was hoping it would be some Daily Mail link with no actual substance but appears not. I can understand the no running in the corridors thing as has always been the case but this is just daft.

A spokesman for Annahilt Primary school told the News Letter that the ban was only in force while works are taking place in the playground.

So - you have works taking place in a playground. What alternative measures would you consider whilst these works are taking place?

Most schools would just shut the playground to avoid kids potentially entering an area where building work is taking place.

I remember running around a corner in school when i was about 7 and cracking my face off a shorter guys head, top of his nut hit my left eye. Had a massive swolen eye for a few weeks, didnt know at the time but i could have lost sight in the eye.

Stop them running so they can get Obese.....Great call :(

good point lol.

i get a feeling that the common folk are being looked down at now, and that the authorities think we need protection from ourselves. too much dictation these days, think we need to take a sledge hammer to government and reduce it.

Everybody has missed this vital point.
