Anyone here a chili fan?

I'm not but due to circumstances (peer pressure) i've tried a few recently. I've been eating birdseye aka finger chilli's and they pretty much destroyed my face, I thought they were just about the max I could go.

That was until tonight at a curry house, they brought out what is know as a 'ghost chilli aka Bhut Jolokia chili pepper'

OH MY GOD

I only had a small amount, enough to fit on a tiny little fork. It make my ears hurt :(

Anyone here a big chill pepper's fan? (Not the band :p)

edit: apparently a couple of years ago the Bhut Jolokia chili pepper was the hottest chill in the world

It still is really. All the others are just selective bread Bhut Jolokia.
Irv
jalapeño is around 7000 scoviles
Scotch bonnet 300,000 scovilles
Bhut Jolokia 1.2million scovilles

Spicy food is awesome, especially Indian. Always make a point of ordering fresh chilli with mine, but I've never had one of those before....I imagine it would melt my face!

i used to suffer from chilli hiccuping which put me off .. then the chilli growing thread inspired me to grow some bolivian rainbow chillis for the last 2 years and i've become addicted :) we put chilli in everything now .. bolivians are not that hot but i have a 2 year old plant and the few chillis it produces are dynamite.

spicy is good and sometimes i get a craving for chilli, but the max i go is birds eye or jalapeno's. there is no point in making it too spicy because you cannot taste the food then as it becomes too overpowering, you may as well just mix some water with chilli powder and drink it instead.

i cannot understand why people order vindaloo's or phaal's, im indian and ate spicy curries all my life, hotter than the average curry, but there is no point in going overboard, it ruins the whole taste.

if you want a decent spicy curry ask for the "staff curry" at your local, you will soon realise its not chillies all the flavour comes from but a huge blend of spices/herbs and ingredients. chilli is only like 5% of a decent curry.

i like a bit of chilli but i had that stagg dynamite chilli with a jacket potato and it blew my socks off!

think its habanero's and something else in it

Why eat chillis on their own? You may as well come on here posting "Hey guys I went to a curry house and managed to poke my eyes out with a fork" I like spicy food to an extent, even fresh chilli where appropriate. But to eat chilli on it's own..?

Depends on the type, really. I love eating Jalapenos out of the jar as a snack, and Cayenne's have a delicious flavour on their own, with a bit of extra heat.

Once you get to Scotch Bonnet/Habanero level though, you need some serious tolerance if you're just going to munch 'em. You'll get the initial fruity flavour, then your head's on fire.

I like heat but I don't go OTT, I've had some curries where even my naan bread tasted hot afterwards or the mint yoghurt, that was fun to begin with but I prefer a meet between taste and heat these days leading to something like a Madras/Pathia being my dish of choice.
