Chimney Breast Ideas

During our house renovations we decided to have the fireplace blocked up and plastered over, in hindsight it wasn’t the best idea. Blocking the fire has left the room without a focal point.
I‘ve considered the idea of having an oak mantle put on the wall with a mirror, clock or picture above it, but worried whether it would be the right thing to do.

Has anyone else done something similar or can offer a suggestion of what would inject some character to the chimney breast?

Using it as a fire is the obvious choice, whether it’s a log burner, open, gas or electric.

Otherwise you could turn it into a media wall which seems to be quite trendy these days but isn’t my cup of tea personally. Just do some Google image searches like “modern chimney breast ideas” or “traditional chimney breast ideas” or whatever look you’re going for.

You could always put a mantle + surround without a fire but I couldn’t live with the paradoxical nature of that.

What I did: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...chased-except-trainers.18737970/post-34970472

Very traditional so I expect not everyone’s cup of tea.

I presume you're talking about a front/living room? Something like the above is decent, but an oak or wooden mantle is always going to look a bit country-cottage. The previous owners in our place blocked up all the fireplaces apart from the living room. We've upgraded the surround and put in nice new tiles and a hearth in there, in the bedrooms we've bought two matching cast iron surrounds to just attach to the front (without knocking in). For the dining room we're also deciding what to do with. It's now knocked in so we have a hole.. will possibly go for an old log burner thing for candles, like the above or this sort of thing. Unsure whether to plaster it or not on the inside...

What type/period of house is it? If it's a period then why not go the whole hog and get a fireplace and surround fitted? You can keep it blocked up and not use it. Or if it's a relatively new house I'd be inclined to go for the TV wall thing if it suits the TV placement.
