China adopts HD-DVD format

Think that was an (accurate :D) swipe at the levels of piracy over there. Not like they'll buy anything, just a shed load of burners and blanks ;)

Wouldn't this drive studios away from HD-DVD?

I mean we'll be able to pick up the latest movies for about £2. :p

No region restrictions either I expect sales of HD-DVD players will rocket. :D

I don't think so. There is nothing stopping people from ripping blu-ray disks and burning them to hd-dvd, so in the end it's the same. While hd-dvd drives and blank disk sales will sky rocket, movie sales will remain pretty much the same. Then again, if people in china can't even afford movies, god knows how people will afford the players and burners, they are even more expensive than blu-ray ones!

History has told us that the most advance piece of technology never wins, VHS/Betamaz Saturn/PS1

HD-DVD is creeping up on Blu-Ray I wonder how much money Sony can afford to pump into Blu-ray without hammering profits, thats if they make any profit, I know it was reported they had massive debts.

Borrowed a Pioneer LX60 Blu-Ray, around £1K? Played POTC, and the film takes several minutes to start. Then loads again. It was like waiting for NeoNeu CD games to load (that old, expensive home arcade machine)

Incredibly annoying.

try a much cheaper PS3 - that particular film (and the other 60 odd I personally own) load in less than 15 seconds - even then what you quote is exactly what every Toshiba HD-E1 owner has to go through too - shrugs
