A maths challenge from China - used to show how far the UK is slipping behind in maths standards - has been successfully tackled by a Shoreham software engineer.

That's all great, but I don't understand

Mr Brockley answered the maths problem during his lunch break on Friday. Even more impressively, he managed this mental battle despite being the father of a four-month old baby.

What? Does being a father make you stupid?

/thanks for the link, long night :p

Is this the story about the maths puzzle posed to potential maths students at university being compared to the A-level Chinese maths problem?

Iirc, there was a prize being offered to people who did the Chinese one whereas the UK university entrance one was simple trigonometry and could be done without a calculator.

edit: it turns out the Chinee one was university standard too. Quite a big difference in difficulty though.

The report was a biased load of crap though, although this has already been discussed in another thread and I cba doing it again.

Sperm are actually just brain cells, so each time you ejaculate, you become a little more stupid.

That explains a lot....................;)

I think they were getting at the lack of sleep that comes from having a new baby. I struggle to think with a normal night's sleep, I'm sure I wouldn't be able to do any remotely difficult maths after 4 months of sleep depravation!

I never actually tried as my A-level maths has been long forgotten, but wasnt it just a simple case of taking that large complicated mess and turning them into simple triangles anyway depending on the question.

Only thing i couldnt remember was what the upside down T meant :D

I think they're trying to say he's not a complete geek. ;)
Ah right. That makes sense. He's a dad which means he has a wife or girlfriend so he has some social skills.

Hmm could be the answer there. Congrats!! :p

Surely the winner should have been a pre-university student? It wasn't supposed to show that adults were stupid, it was supposed to show that students going to university didn't know enough maths.

Instead, it proved neither.
