Chinese speakers - Help!

It's hard to tell if it's rubbish from the marking alone, reverse googling shows up Yongzheng 1723-1735.

If it was proper Ming (lol) it would not be sitting in a supermarket.

Casual racism

I'm confused why would a Chinese vase have anything to do with my wife been on the phone to her family in Taiwan?

To the OP are you still needing any advice ?

EDIT The Mrs said the writing is very old over 150 years old but she thinks its a copy with the writing trying to make out it is older than it is.

She's still going through the other website to see what it says. Putting everything together I'd say if you like it buy it but its not going to be worth much. If it turns out it is worth a bit treat it as a bonus:)

Those symbols read as follows: "man who sticks thumb up in every photo will eventually jam thumb in bottom". It's an ancient Chinese proverb.

Serious answer which has been said in previous posts the text translates to

Made in Yongsheng < Name of the Emperor who was in the position for a period of time from 13.12.1678 to 8.10.1735 with Qing Dynasty been the period of time.

So in short its a copy or you may of got lucky. Apparently UK is a relatively common place to find these sort of vases.

Hope this helps.

The gf is a native mandarin speaker and she said it's really old Chinese so can't understand it, her grandparents generation would struggle to understand. All she can understand is the location has got "south" in the name.

She also said "we sell this to foreigners, because foreigners know nothing"

Thanks for your help and trust email :). Yeah it'll be a copy, maybe if it was a one off on a car boat there'd be a 1% chance it was old but seeing as it's in a Chinese-owned shop I'm assuming they know better. Anyway like I said, was just curious to know what it said so thank you :)

It has all the hallmarks of a genuine Ming vase, can see this on the antiques roadshow and I'd expect a valuation somewhere between £2-3m especially if it has the original box. I'd probably buy it.

My Chinese speaking wife could only recognise one character 'zheng' as the rest are too old.

You already know the answer though - you have not found an antique Qing dynasty pot in a Chinese ceramic shop above a supermarket :). It is a copy of that style though. It's worth something less than the price tag on it - the 'discounted' one, not the 'original' price. If you like it, buy it.

As for bringing back stuff like that from Asia, me and the wife have managed. Not quite that big, but we bought back three antique Nyonya pots from Malacca, Malaysia this year. Just wrapped them, put them in hand luggage and took care!

£55 for that? You're mad, but whatever if you like it then go ahead.

As for "reduced from £280"? That's like believing that the full prices at DFS are genuine...

Yeah we've done it with some smaller items and textiles but would be difficult of something this size.

I'd like you to try and find even a plain ceramic vase of this size/weight from your local garden centre for less. And I noted the pointless full price so not sure what point you're trying to make. Though 90% of their stock was 'full price' and quite expensive so I imagine some people did pay that!
