That way if it gets stolen, you can only lose however much money you put on it. Would be safer than cash I think because it would be traceable.

I dont want any debt, cant be assed to open a bank account, so I got one of those. Just top it up when I want, pay online (its chip n pin too). Its a Maestro. Theres a £5 a year charge, but its just handy to have.
 
Some places don't have the facility, the shop can also bypass it - but it holds them liable as the bank can detect wether it was a C+P transaction or not.
