I've noticed an increasing trend in the garage where I work to use the pin number for your wife / husbands card, or someone elses...

I notice the name is occasionally "Mrs" when a male is standing in front of me, or vice versa....

I've never refused any cards for payment if I realise this is happening as I'm unsure about the law & using other peoples cards - even if its a joint account. Can anyone clarify this to me?

Thanks

It still doesn't count if it is their wives/husbands or not. They should not use it.
I had loads of people try this on when i worked in retail and i plain refused to let them use it.
Plus just becuase it says MRS on the card how do you know that it is actually their surname and their wives card.

I think it is allowed if it is a joint bank account as the card will say both mr. and mrs. Otherwise, it is illegal I believe. For all the cashier knows, it could have been stolen (revenge) or something.

If you have a joint account they issue two seperate cards with your own name on them.

why are they handing you the card anyway ? don tthye just slide it in the card holder , type in pin , leave ?

edit - ah i see, your just been nosey :)

In the Tesco I worked in they said that it is illegal and can be classed a fraud so I always refused the sale.

It is fraud and shops and people serving will be liableif seen to be incompetent.

What is to say that Mr and Mrs haven't just had a divorce?

Many places, including Tesco, have the pin reader built into their tills, and only use the pin pad as a place for the customers to enter the pin.

It is indeed wrong - you should not use another person's card - end of. If you give your wife your pin and card, she runs off having spent all the moeny on the card, maxxed your o/d etc then the liability rests with YOU (or both if it's a joint a/c). Had she taken it without your permission and had obtained your pin by neferious means then the bank would refund you and the police would be much more interested

I often didn't know if it was the right name on sales as the point of c&p is the cashier doesn’t need to touch the card (to stop fraud). If a person was returning an item with Mr/Mrs I'd immediately call up and class it as fraud and the card was locked, number of occasion the person walked off so it must have been stolen.

It is wrong, but cashiers have no cause to look at the card details. The system is designed so that nobody other than the customer needs to see the card in that amount of detail....?

As you should. Only exception I would consider is if they had further proof they were the other half of the Mr / Mrs :)

First time it happened I did get my manager down to check as I wasn't 100% sure about this with regards to joint accounts and such.

Trouble is, said customer just went around the corner, drew it out the cashpoint, and paid that way. :/

We have chip and pin, but we still swipe the card through the till. Odd I know, but that's just how it's set up.

Yeah, why is that? They do that everytime I pay by card at my local Tesco Metro, quite strange :\
