Chip running to hot.

Hi Guys, need some help please. I'm running a Gigabyte GA-7NNXP board with a 3200+ Athlon chip and 2x 1GB sticks of Corsair XMS ram. My problem is my chip was running far to hot, so I changed the fan and made sure it's seated properly. Things are better but I would like to know what the core temp in the cmos should be set at or what the default should be. Thanks in advance.

Hi, i'm running the same CPU as you, and after i cleaned the heatsink and re-seated it with thermal compound, my temps are about 43c idle, and 50c load.

This is with a thermaltake volcano 11

The cpu voltage on mine is about 1.6

Hi Benjo, mine is still running at 57c idle?. I'm using a Gigabyte 3D cooler-ultra which you can increase the rpm of the fan, it's at 3500rpm at the moment but it will go up to 4500rpm. The Vcore on mine is at 1.676v

I know those chips run quite hot, and they can run safely at higher temps than that, but i seem to recall people running similar chips at much lower temps. Might want to consider getting a better cooler perhaps?

Some people on here might be using a zalman 7000 cpu cooler on a similar chip, see what temps they are getting. (Lets hope some of them read this thread now :D)

I dont know, perhaps its just me, but 57 degs for me seems rather toasty :)

I also have a problem with this chip.

Overclocked by 400mhz and left it like that for about 2months.
Recently the idle temp rose from 40c to 46c! The full load was 58c!

That must be bad. I am still using the stock heatsink though

Hi woodsy2k, yeah it does seem rather toasty as you but it. According to the amd web site 85% is the max temperature.

Those temps are fine. 50c is about normal idle for these chips.

ASH1, what kind of ventalation have you got in your pc? When you re-sat the cooler, did you use thermal compound? How many case fans?

On my pc, i have an intake, and another fan mounted above the chip using a bracket. I also have an exhaust fan at the back of the case, i've removed the wire mesh at the back of the case aswell.

Heres a pic of the mounted fan

Hmm, i'm idling at 41c now :) i cleaned my pc up last week

Hi mike, mine was running at 95-100% with the stock heatsink at idle. The only reason I used the stock heatsink was so I didn't void my warranty. looks like I'll be sending it back to amd for a new one.

Stock heatsinks are carp mate. I'd recomment getting a Zalman 7000 heatsink, one of the few remaining Socket A coolers on the market (i think). none-the-less, a very good cooler, a very quiet. the copper/aluminium version can be bought for ~£15 from OcUK and will beat the stock cooler by a country mile.

I was almost going to recomend an Evo 33 but they wont fit socket A

Hi benjo, yeah I used thermal compound but amd say you should use thermal pads so I went out and got some today. I have two exhaust fans on the back and if you include the power supply fan that makes three. I also have a fan on my hard drive. I'll buy another fan tomorrow and put it on the front as an intake.

I'm using a gigabyte 3D cooler ultra now but thanks for the advice. The temp is still a little on the high side, I think the chip may now be damaged.

To give you an idea I'm putting 1.5v through my Venice 3000 and I get idle temps of 28-29.C and load of aroud 42-45.C. Today hasn't been hot, can see this going up 10.C quite easily in mid-summer.

I'd aim for loads of under 50.C, but higher is safer, but I prefer to have a bit of a safety barrier.

Afaik, we're talking about the 32bit XP bartons ;)

might be normal for you but they never ran that hot as a rule. my 1700 tbred @ 2.4ghz used to run 54-55c full load with an sp-97
