Chipped Windscreen - Replace?

Replace it. The repairs they do are completely rubbish - I had mine 'repaired'. I could see the chip still after it was done and a year later all the resin has come out and the chip is as bad as ever.

This, had mine done and it looked terrible. Called them back later that day and told them I wanted it replacing instead. They didn't seem at all surprised so I'd guess that a lot of people that get repairs decide they want it replacing when they see the quality of the repair.

Maybe you're expecting too much from repairs? They're designed to strengthen the chip so it doesn't spread, you'll never make it invisible.

RAC don't own Auto Windscreens anymore btw.

Not enough profit I guess! I think Aviva dropped RAC AW a while ago with Norwich Union and then a german company bought AW.

Can you find out for me how long it would take you to get hold of a 1993 LNA31 Nissan Cefiro windscreen? My current garage are taking bloody ages.

Jeez have you not just scrapped that already? Its been off the road for nearly a year!

Bin it and get something that doesnt suck :p

Wow, I am surprised. I used autoglass three times for repairs to my last 5 and I couldn't find the repairs at all. The first time was in a supermarket carpark and was great and the second time, I went to a branch, where the branch manager told me to come back in three days. When I did though the technician said the manager was a plank for not A) getting it done sooner and B) not telling me to put a bit of tape across it as when moisture gets in, it turns it black and you will always have that black mark. Fortunately in this case, I had already had the forethought to do this.

Yeah will do

as for RAC they were owned by n union and they have been brought by aviva which now owns RAC. Rac has changed hands five times in like 10 years

They repaired 3 chips in mine and cannot fault the repairs.

Every repair is different some u can see others u can't. A repair is designed to stop your windscreen from cracking. Autoglass use the best repair system. Our repairs very rarely go wrong. Bu we give a life time warranty if the repair fails :)

Yes they will, I have an offer through one of the BMW forums from somebody who works for one of my insurance companies approved windscreen fitters who claims he can do it.

Interesting. I really need a BMW bit of glass and seal as the one currently fitted by AW I believe to be for a Roadster, and the Coupe's screen is different.

I have to much wind noise.

Just to add to the "don't have a repair" brigade

I had one done on my M3 , loads more visible after than it was before

I had a chip repaired in my windscreen recently by autoglass. Did an excellent job. He said it was just about do-able and once repeaired neither myself, my mother or brother could spot it until he pointed it out to us.

Which forum? Mine will probbably fail its next MOT.

I have two "really big" (according to the Autoglass people.. about 6-8mm) chips in my windscreen behind the mirror (i.e. out of my line of vision). I've had them for over a year now and I'm not sure if they were there when I bought the car or if I got them shortly after.

Anyway I spoke to Autoglass yesterday and the lady said that because they are less than 4 inches apart the windscreen would need to be replaced. Also because it's been there for over a year, a repair wouldn't be as effective. Took it into my local branch today and after looking at it they said a replace would be more appropriate.

Now that's a big step from a £10 repair to a £70 replace. But by the sounds of it, maybe it would be £70 well spent - if I had that to spare.

But it passed an MOT a few months ago and it's only really visible to the passenger or from the outside (which I don't really care about anyway). So unless the crack expands during the winter period - should I even bother? As far as I'm concerned it's only cosmetic at the moment.

Well no glass company with fit a BMW stamped windscreen for just your excess. Have to pay a bit extra or ASK really nicely :p

I know Autoglass doesn't make glass. We go to whoever makes the glass for said car company.

If you want a BMW stamped bit of glass. We would go to bmw, but bmw hasn't made it. They just stamp the glass that we would have fitted in the first place
They don't even do that - they just pay whoever makes the glass to stamp it for them :D.

The majority of the time replacement glass is identical to OE glass ;)
