I was reversing up into the drive today and it caught some snow and side swiped the wall. My fault, should have put it forward or left it on the road.. Anyway, has anyone had experiences with these guys, preferably around the Leeds / Sheffield area so I could get the same people, as I've heard the job varies a lot between franchise.

The damage;

How much do these things usually cost?

Its pot luck with chips away, some are apparently awful and do a poor job.

Ive heared others though do a good job.

Hmm i'm looking for a repair on a scuff similar to that, got quoted £145 for halfords but £125 for plastic... anyone know if they do a decent job?

I got an awful one, I asked them to leave while they were trying to pull a dent with a sucker and glue gun. Total amatures.

Glue gun and sucker bridge works very well though. Few years ago I pulled couple of trolley dings and a large-ish dent in Primera's rear door with glue gun and tenner worth of a sucker from auction site.

Chips away made a total hash of my MR2 when somebody scuffed the bumper. I'd have been better off painting it with Dulux emulsion, would've looked more professional.

What was so bad about it? I'm seeing mixed reviews but can't find any reviews for the local franchise :/

IME they weren't very good. I would personally pop down or call a good sized local independant car dealer and ask them who they use. Most will have some arrangement to get new cars prep'd for sale and can obviously vouch for their work over many cars so would be a better reference than us!

As the OP stated, it varies with the franchise.

You do hear some horror stories, but the Chips Away guy round here did a repair on the bumper of my boss's Jag, and you couldn't tell it had been done.

ChipsAway made a complete and utter hash of a scuff I had on a door of my last car. It was laughable.

The guy turned up, spent ages trying to get the paint code for my car to make up a batch of paint (54 plate dark grey mondeo, metallic). Eventually got some swatches of very very similar colours and had me choose the closest one (I assumed this was because of slight paint fade over the car's 5 year life, at the time. Anyway, we agreed on a certain one, and I left the guy to his job.

4 hours later, the chap called me out to inspect the door. It was the wrong colour. Not just slightly different, but COMPLETELY wrong. To cut a long story short, he'd matched the colour to a mk2 mondeo in grey, not a mk3. The reason? I had a private plate that began N*****, so he'd matched the grey to a 1995(?) N-reg Ford.

If I'd have been inside at the time, I'd have hit the roof. He even tried to pin the mistake on me, as I'd not told him the car wasn't an N-reg. How someone who deals with cars, day in, day out where specific attention must be paid to the age of the car could get this wrong is completely beyond me. The door was completely ruined. I'd never use ChipsAway ever again.

A few months later on my current car, I had a bit of bodywork done by a small, independant body shop that was brilliant. Fast, efficient service, and the quality of work is stunning. They charged me half what ChipsAway would have wanted.

Had someone from chipsaway come and so a few scuffs on my rear bumper in the summer after a minor parking mishap. He did a great job, cost me £138 for three main scuffs and he also did some of the smaller dings around the boot while he was there. Can't tell it's been repaired now, even though he did warn me that he'd found evidence that the bumper had been repaired before and he might have trouble matching the colours.

On my girlfriends iPhone right now but when I get back to my pc I'll dig out the thread I made when I got mine done. All in all though, great job.

I use Ultimate Styling in Tamworth for my bodywork.

Welded in a new rear arch, repaired the other, painted both rear wings and arches and fixed some rust at the bottom of the rear passenger door (inc painting the door)

£220 inc labour

Did a damn good job aswell :D

Chipsaway did a really crap job on my old Audi TT and they would not come back and sort it out

Avoid.

Just been on the phone to my local guy, he has 12years experience and offers a lifetime guarantee. Not sure now, it's basically a time issue too, this seems the most convienient. I'd take a day off though if I could find a decent body shop that will sort it. Quotes seem to be around £120.

A bit late I know but the damage that you ve pictured should be repaired successfully by any Chipsaway franchisee, ballpark cost a hundred quid. The repair should be good enough that from 2 steps away you won t see it but very close inspection it may just be visible. After all the repair will be done on your drive exposed to the elements etc.. If it does nt meet those standards, don t pay. The repair will be guaranteed not to deteriorate during your lifetime ownership of the vehicle. If you have trouble with your local guy, contact Chipsaway HO.
There should certainly be no colour difference

Sounds like it's pot luck with them, I've used a guy in Reading who has an actual shop rather than a mobile gig and did a good job for me, there was some pretty expensive metal in there when I went and he said he has a contract with the jag/landrover dealership which was pretty reassuring.
