I am going to purchase my 1st road legal bike soon. I have a choice between these two at the moment:

Lifan Apollo 125cc

Lifan Edge 125cc

I have no idea what to choose. I prefer the Apollo, but I am so accustomed to off-road style bikes. Any ideas on what would be better?

Id hate to see the quality of one of those though after a years riding etc, thats if it lasts through a year =/

i know these types of bikes are getting better quality and the parts are becoming more readily available.
You could find something like a CG125, ok it doesn't look as good, but it is pretty much bombproof and will cost you almost nothing to run.

I'll really have to wait and see until I buy it then. I had a Lifan 72cc Motocross bike that lasted for about 3-4 years. I'm hoping to only keep this for a year or 2

£1,000 new?

That's pretty tempting but one does have to wonder what you get for your money. If I had to choose it would be the Apollo, I cannot stand full off-road/dirt bike styles personally.

I like the style of the off-road bikes, but it just doesn't look right on the road and I want to get the experience of driving a (Well, almost) sports style bike.

I've had a look at these in the garage and they do look and feel pretty good. They also come with 12 months mechanical and labour warrenty plus you wouldn't have to worry about an mot for 3 years...

Don't spend that much on one of those. You will not ride it forever and you will get nothing for it when you come to sell.

There are plenty of CG 125s about for similar money.

Off road styled bikes tend to be very useful when driving in cities as you get a better view over the tops of most cars.

I would echo the other sentiments about buying cheap new bikes. Even though Lifan are one of the better Chinese manufacturers, they will still suffer bad depreciation compared to a second hand Japanese bike. Unless having a warranty is more important to you than residuals, or you plan to keep the bike for a good few years then I'd personally avoid the Chinese bikes.

A four stroke will be more reliable and economic and better sounding, though a little slower than the "wasp in a tin can" two strokes.

Nothing wrong with a good sounding two stroke!! :p
Or the smell :D

4 stroke would be more reliable for your first bike

I see your point about strokers but..........

I would stick to four stroke myself

After owning such two strokes inc Gamma's, The cost of re-build

Peanuts for a 125 fella.

A whole £28.56 for a piston kit?

A rebore doesnt cost a great deal and you can throw it together in less than a morning.

If you are ok with never seeing any of that £1000 back after a year then go for it. It will be worth pretty much nothing after a year so don't expect to recoup your losses by selling it.

That's my only worry :( If I was to get a Yamaha YBR125, would it still be worth some money after a year? I've seen a few for £700 online
