Hi All,
I have the choice of getting one of the 2 lenses this weekend (renting) for a tourist trip around london. I will be taking photos of buildings and people, so which would be best.....

Looking for sharpness incase i get a good photo i would want to blow it up onto a large canvas...

The 2 lenses i can choose from (unless someone else can think of a better one) would be:

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM

Which should i choose?

Many Thanks

Defintely the 17-55 for a 550D. If you only want something to take photos of buildings/architecture etc, I would consider the Canon 10-22. But if you need it to be a bit more general purpose then the 17-55 is a cracker :)

24-105L on a crop body will be too long for most architecture shots imo.

Yeah for arciteture you usually (but not always) want the widest angle you can get - hence the 17-55 as on a crop frame its only going to be ~28mm equivalent. As a result I echo the 10-20 which will give you ~16mm equivalent on that body which will (probably) give you more pleasing building shots (but not necessarily depending on your actual focus) than the 17-55.
