Either way I'll hate you because of my envy.
I'll hate you most if you go with option 2, sort out your whole system, the 8800GTS is still a stunning piece of kit but I reckon you'll need a more powerful CPU to get the most out of it.

If you read the whole topic you would realise thats what i am doing...im getting the GTS later when the prices drop a little and selling current gear...
 
No need to get an X2 for gaming they'll be slower than single core.

Get an Athlon 4000+ OEM chip for about £60, mine does 3.18ghz on a good air cooler, it did 3.1ghz on a crap one, they all seem to do 3ghz on air anyway.

Should be able to sell your 3500+ for about £30-£35, you got yourself a good 800-1000mhz for £30 odd quid.
 
It certainly won't be "optimal", but then for that sort of money thats not really the point.

As opposed to spending more than 15 times that on a conroe setup, it'll do the job for now.
