Hello,

I'm currently in the process of building a new system, partly for work, partly for gaming. I'll be running an i5-2300 with 4GB DDR3 and a single screen setup. My budget is £120 but if justified, I could possibly stretch a bit extra.

I've been reading various comparisons and reviews on Anandtech over the past 2 weeks and so far, i'm down to two choices.

NVIDIA GTX 460 OC - £106.
ATI 6850 1GB - £119 (competitor).

I was under the impression that the 6850 would be slightly faster but after reading a comparison of the two, it seems like it's the other way around.

What would you guys recommend?

i am just waiting for my GTX460 to arrive today. have been running 2xHD6850s but not overly impressed. i have found a lot of issues with it, even with CF disabled. if you are not in a rush, i will be posting benchtest results on the HD6850, HD6850 CF and GTX460 later today.

I think you'd be better off getting a Sapphire 5850 Extreme if you can put the budget to £130. GTX460 1GB and 6850 are pretty much just on par with each other, but 5850 is around 10~12% faster, for just a tenner more.

Most people can clock that card from 725MHz core clock to 900MHz using Sapphire Trixx, which would be as fast as a stock speed 5870. GTX460 and 6850 on the other hand their max overclock would only bring it to around stock speed GTX470.

the HD5850 outperforms the HD6850 by quite a way, even though it is slightly older.

my GTX460 is fitted and benching as we speak, will post up a HD6850 vs GTX460 thread shortly.

you can get a 6870 elsewhere for around £130, so that is the card I'd get

I had a look, its nearer £140 and thats a bit too much over budget.

The 5850 does look nice, but its £25 quid more. I think bang for buck, the 460 is better, but technically the 5850 if faster.

Decisions! Someone make it for me yeah?

KiiyzOo and Robi, I'd edit the posts as you're not really supposed to email competitor names and tell the forums you're doing it! (even though everyone does :p)

5850 might be old but it's on par with the 6870 (nearly) and is worth the money easily
