Hello there.

Iv not been looking closely at the CPU market for some time now, not since the conroe's came out really, back when i got my E6600 and im glad i did at over 200 pounds, best CPU iv ever had.

But heres my questions because as i say iv not had my eyes open cause iv not needed anything new :p
Iv noticed the new 45nm dual and quad cores but are there to be any new processors coming out any time soon from intel? because i might buy ether the 9300 or 9450 (if i got the names right :P)
And if theres none coming out soon how long untill anything newer does come out? the same time distance between the first c2d and the new quads now? or not that long again

Im not fussy about spending money if i know its going to last, my processors lasted a few years now at 3.5ghz 24/7 :)

thanks

sorry i ment 9300 or 9400, but 9300 is being getting scrapped then, does that mean the 9400 will change to the price of the 9300 to replace it yes? and the price of the 9550 to go to 9450 price?

So i might aswell wait :)

Yip the Q9400 is taking the place of the Q9300, and the Q9550 will drop to the current price of the Q9450.

I believe you meant the 9450 as the 9400 doesnt exist yet, its a new model which will replace the 9300 at the current 9300 price point. (so it wont actually change price as it doesnt have one yet)

The 9450 will be scrapped and the 9550 reduced to 9450 price.

If you dont need anything, hold off until Nehalem, there should be an "upper mid range" chip that will run on the high end bloomfield platform thats somewhere around the Q9450 price point.

I think they're coming out end 2008, however that's going to be the high end chips and extreme editions, for mainstream affordable you're probably looking at Q1 2009 if not later. Personally I'm aiming for a september build and hoping to grab a 9550 when the prices drop :)

Could be the best part of a year before it's affordable tbh.

Depends on your budget, for sub £100 parts, sure and they wont be overclockable, but for £200-350 budget the "high mainstream" quads could be a fairly early release.

Not sure if the Q4 '08 parts are just the Extremes though, or if the high end mainstream quads will be released as well.

Paid a little over 300 for my E6700 back in Q3'06. I believe it was either one of OcUK's first, or second batch of Conroes :). Been delighted with it great processor and was worth the money at the time.

Will I go for an early Nehalem... well I would like to, performance should be a good step up over my E6700... All depends on how much "early buyers" markup OcUK add. (+ I dont buy an X series, it will have to be a Q series processor)

I can't see you getting a sub £300 part til atleast a couple of months after release.

The Q6600 was over £300 for a couple of months after release. I paid £400 for mine on release day.

Does depend on supply/demand. But its going to be intel's 1000unit $ prices that really will tell the story.

Didnt the Q6600 release at $530, which is bascially the same price point as the E6700 when it was launched. Paid 314+vat for the E6700, in Q3 the 3Ghz Penyrn will be a $530 part, so Nehalem will need enough clockspeed to be considerably faster than the Q9650 considering the need for new motherboard and ddr3 memory.

Im hopeing that on the bloomfield we'll get a 2.66 quad @ $316 and a 2.83 quad a $530. And hope that the supply is good enough that we dont get shafted too badly. Of course the prices will drop and intel will up the clocks.

All depends on how fast it is compared to the current models, and if the performance is enough for people to get excited enough to replace Kentsfield and Penryn systems.

I'd certainly consider dropping 300+vat on a Nelahem. (reclaim vat on my business expenses anyway)

Only time will tell, its certainly possible that they may only release the Extreme and the highest clocked "standard" part. Whereas many people will be interested in the lowest clocked part which is bloomfield compatible.

I've been waiting since last November for Nehalem and I'll have roughly £500 to spend by the time it's released. I don't want to spend that much but I have budgeted for it.

A Quad 2.66GHZ Nehalem was recently tested and it’s quicker than the QX9770.

I've heard they are substantially quicker and I can't wait to get one. I've put off my entire build until then. Just really hope they come out before or around Crimbo.

Problem is that by then a Q9550 might only be the same price as a q6600 is now so they will need to be substantially faster clock per clock and overclock to very high levels to warrant the expenditure IMO.

Same old story, the best high end comes at a price premium.

I personally cause I just upgrade ot mid range all the time when they drop the price (just got a q6600 only 2 months ago) will be looking at picking up a 2nd hand Q9550 for around £100 as my next upgrade as you guys sell yours off to buy Nehalems.

You see I'm building from scratch as I sold my last system a while back. So there's no point in me getting old tech when there's a new socket round the corner. I understand where you're coming from though.

Ah in which case I agree then. You might as well have the new socket which might stand you for a few years and get a Nehalem.

Long time to be without a decent rig though.

Problem I can see with your budget is that a cpu might be £300+, a mobo £200+ and a couple of Gb of ram still £100+ . You might have to either wait a bit longer or comprise on your rig.

It is along time mate and to honest with you it's killing me! Got my brand new Silverstone TJ07B-W Case sat on my desk doing nothing.:(

I'm planning on spending around £2700 on PC and Custom Water Cooling so the cost won't be a problem. £500 was budget for CPU. I know that's a lot to spend but I will have been without a system for a year and I've spent a lot of money on my house so I'm going to treat myself!
