Choosing a gaming monitor

I haven't yet. I'm really struggling, options are the Samsung G7 or I might just get an LG CX/C1 oled instead. I find this monitor business really frustrating, anything decent costs too much in my opinion for a 27" screen with crap HDR hence the looking at the LG OLEDs instead and using it from more of a distance, at least it will do the PC justice
HDR to me looks fine on the dell think they have a no quibble

Do you not find the blacks are grey and dark games look washed out and lose a lot of contrast / definition?

for me its fine but only been playing Warzone , Freya was playing sims and planet zoo and both looked really fresh and vibrant

I did run the start of peeky blinders this morning to see how it handled all the grey and black and it looked good

but then don't have much to judge it against my old 144hz 1080p was very washed out and grey

For me no monitor can touch the OLED I have downstairs. I have tried/returned the LG 850 as it’s got horrible contrast and it also does not work properly with the Series X. The DELL shares the same panel so will have similar poor contrast. I ended up with a G7 which is far better, but seeing what my OLED is capable of leaves the G7 a distant 2nd place. Problem with OLED is size, and screen burn. I kinda wish I never saw a game on my OLED as it’s now the unfortunate benchmark other monitors need to live up to.

Couldn't agree more. It's a real dilemma as it's not easy using a PC on a 48" or 55" screen and yes screen burn is a worry on an oled. I agree, the 27GL850 was absolutely awful and I think you have to spend near oled prices to get a half decent monitor. I guess it's fine if you play bright colourful games all day but something f like The Medium is pretty much unplayable on an IPS monitor IMO, it's very compromised visually put it that way..

The only VA panel I've come across, and I have tried a fair bit by now, that has any place as a gaming monitor IMHO is the Samsung G7(can't speak for the g9 as I haven't tried it). Every other VA panel that has been praised to high heaven by reviewers has been dreadful and horrible with clear smearing issues. The G7(I have the 27" version) with firmware 1009.3 has exceptional pixel response once it is warmed up and the slightly weaker dark transitions only really show up once you go look for it in tests. I hate smearing and uneven pixel response across color transitions but the G7 is very good overall. My sample does have the scanline issue at the top sometimes but I don't notice it cause I never use maximized browsers when gaming anyway and I had to go look for the issue to even notice it but that may well vary on the person using the monitor ofc.

If money is no object :p The trouble is that the top-spec 21:9 are double the price of the top-spec 16:9.

The £400 21:9 have crap response times and I'd only use them for productivity :p Whereas a £400 16:9 can be decent.

I don't think I could go back from 32:9 at this point, it's perfect for productivity and games. (Sammy CRG90)

Sorry, it's not perfect, it's not OLED. But I think non-16:9 OLEDs are a long way off still, it'll do until then.

Except for those couple latest Samsungs VA's lot slower dark shade/black starting transitions are visible in every actual measurements including review.
It's just swept under the carpet while staring only that better than other LCDs contrast.

This is the best dark shade response time comparison of modern IPS and standard VAs:

In fact whole lots of problems of LCDs are pretty much under reviewed.
Wish someone started doing reviews with also side by side comparison to OLED to hammer home crappines of LCD and why industry should have moved R&D to bring new techs into use.

There are lot better options for even that use:
Those ultra low screens have **** for vertical resolution for productivity, especially when compared to consumption of desk space.
That price level has 3840x2160 monitors available to give that real estate for working:

As I said in the very post of mine that you quoted, you can see the slower dark transitions if you go look for it, by either pixel peeping or running tests designed to show, and even then the G7 will show that it's in a league of its own compared to all the other VA panels out there and during normal use, it won't hit you in the face cause you barely notice it. I've had that 32" Viewsonic 144hz VA panel that TechYesCity and many others have praised, what a blur monster that was and not just black smear but also red smear. The G7 isn't perfect but it strikes a very nice balance compared to TN with their poor colors and at times over-the-top overshoot or IPS where you just have to hope for one without backlight bleed but also with minimal IPS glow.

I too would love for OLED to be the main panel tech for PC monitors but until that happens I think that Samsung has done a good job with the G7 striking a good balance between the strength of TN, IPS, and VA while keeping the weaknesses to a minimum.

I might have considered one but for the ridiculously aggressive curve. Some curve, esp on an UW, is probably OK. But Samsung have just dialled the curve up to 11 :p As a number of reviewers pointed out, "Who was asking for such drastically curved screens?"

Red smear?
That sounds weird.
Must be coming from cases of red channel brightness values being low causing red channel subpixels to have worser response times than green and blue sub pixels.
LCD itself is "colour blind" and only adjusts amount of light passing through with colour of subpixel coming from filter blocking other colours.
That should show similarly also in green or blue colours in case of their grey scale value being low.

Yeah, the curve is something else :) I personally thought I would have a hard time with it on my 27" but took me less than an hour to forget about it. However, it is not something I would pay extra for as I find a curve on 16:9 displays to be pointless.
