Choosing an AMD, is Ghz everything?

I'm shopping for my processor and I'm just wondering is Ghz everything? I need to make a decision very soon. I was going to wait on BD but at this stage that would mean living without a pc for possibly another month. Not going to happen lol.

So I've got an AMD build so I've looked at these two below. I'm looking for speed obviously I just want whatever will run quickest.

3.7ghz Quad -http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-304-AM&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1943

3.3ghz 6 Core - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-277-AM

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Ghz isn't everything unless you're only running on one core. 0.4Ghz of extra speed doesn't beat the power of two more cores. The 6 core is the faster one and the one I'd reccomend, similar price too. Also the 1100T will easily OC to 3.7Ghz.

Take a 955be and push the multiplier up till you get to 965/970 speeds.

But whats the main use of this machine?

Speed is not the only thing you should consider these days. It's also the CPU design which affects the performance of the CPU.

What is your budget and what will you be doing on the PC? Sandy Bridge could be a better choice as it performs better per clock compared to the Phenom.

Gaming and overclocking would have to be fairly simple as I haven't overclocked before. I'm lost for what processor to go for lol

Get an AM3+ board and a cheap dual core processor. Sell the processor when bulldozer is released and get one of those instead.

Or just get a 2500k.

If you want to buy now, and not wait for BD, then you'd be insane to go AMD IMO.

I've been an AMD fanboy since I started building, but even I can see how much more power a 2500/2600K setup can give for your monies. Sandy Bridge is more efficient in terms of electricity use, more efficient in terms of work done per clock cycle, it clocks higher and runs cooler.

I'd still say get a cheap dual core. £45 on here and sell it for £20 or so when bulldozer arrives and get an eight core. You are upgrading at a bad time though, new processor and new graphics cards coming soon.

I can't find an OC link but it's a Corsair 1000w

So you can fit any card you want then, and still add a second.

I know my timing stinks, but as I say I'm not close enough to their release to be able to wait around. So it's a difficult situation.

I haven't looked into the motherboard listed above to even know if I could go SB.

It does seem like the best bet might be a cheap processor now and exchange for a BD on release. Problem is though that I also need to get a Gfx card.

But with a £500 budget I surely wouldn't be able to get both one of the new BDs and a newly released Gfx card. So it's a mute point in some ways.

I wouldn't expect bulldozer cpus to be more than £200 for the top end unless they demolish sandybridge (which is unlikely).

Is the 580 worth an extra £160 though? I would say no
