Christenings

We were asked to be god parents and hadn’t even met the kid! Just said a couple of verses, other than that no one had to do much.
Who has "godparents" these days, and what do they even do?

Hah, wiki says you're supposed to ensure he has a Christian upbringing and help with his spiritual development. Have fun with that ;)

Still not as bad as the UK Chancel Repair Liability. Biggest scam going - You can get hit with it regardless of your religion, or if non-religious. Been some right horror stories over the years. Should be outlawed. In fact I think someone did once try to get it outlawed, but it never went anywhere. Might get my MP back onto that one....

Oh, also, can't stand the hypocrisy of the 90% of people who get their kids Christened who are not even Christian and just do it "because". Don't stand in a church and promise to bring up your kid in the "way of God" if you don't even believe. It's just the same paying the church for doing that as it is giving your money to Scientology.

Your solicitor should run a chancel check search and if there’s a possibility of liability you'd be advised to take out an indemnity insurance policy to protect you form the potential cost.

Apparently the indemnity policies for chancel repair are so cheap (less than the cost of the search itself) it might be a cheaper option just to take one out if you're in an affected area.

Indeed. I think I paid £14 for mine. Alas some people don't get them and end up shafted.

Indemnity insurance protects you from the legal cost but not the actual cost of any successful action, no?

Questions;
Is there a general format to christenings
How long do the ceremonies usually last
Is is customary to bring a gift

No format other than the ceremony which will be done by the official usually the priest/vicar generally no more than an hour or so its for children so short attention spans. No gift for the majority of guests. Basically turn up sit down witness ceremony and leave, there will probably be reception for guests a bit like a wedding but much shorter.

Traditionally they were stand ins incase the original parents died which wasn't an uncommon occurance then the child would have someone to in theory at anyrate look after their interests. These days its simply a title.

Tbh its not like the babies are being given any choice, which is the main thing I hate about it.

Again its tradition like the fact most people women at anyrate prefer to be married in church rather than a registry office despite almost no one being practising christians anymore.

It's variously called chancel insurance, chancel repair insurance or chancel indemnity insurance.

They're policies which protect against the financial claim from the church and pay for the costs if there is a liability due.

Christening our boy today.

Be half hour in the church then straight back to ours for an almighty **** up.

Got about 300 pints lined up ready to go so should be a good afternoon.

Well it's pretty much all gone :p:p:p

Had to do that with 1 god parent unfortunately due to covid and living abroad.

If the parents are not church goers then I feel it's a bit hypocritical taking your kids for a christening. Although most young parents do it these days simply for the money and gifts.

Hmmm why stop at Christenings? Do the full round of inducting your child into every religion / cult and collect all the free gifts.

I realized since my teens that 'gift giving culture' is a load of narcissistic / predatory crap and never bought or engaged in any gift giving type things for all of my adulthood.

You wouldn't believe the number of strops and meltdowns I've had from other 'adults' when I refused to buy anyone any gifts. 'OMG WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF NO ONE GOT YOU ANYTHING?' ... Erm, don't get me anything then?

Not even celebrated my own birthday or any event in over 20 years, every such thing is ruined by gift giving BS.

I don't even remember my kids christening, not my thing but the wife is Catholic.

Not for the gifts, to get into good schools ;)

We refuse to go to them, not been to the last 5 or 6 nephews/nieces christenings, none of my siblings are religious so I told them they were hypocrites and I'd see them in the pub after, they all seemed to accept it as we never got any kick back.
