My girlfriend is having a lot of trouble with her computer. When you switch it on the fans are spinning, but that's all that happens, no beeps and nothing on the screen.

The comp was running on default settings, with nothing overclocked. I've tried disconnecting dvd, hd, ram, graphics card, but it doesn't make any difference. It's only around 9 months old.

One strange thing is that when I connect the plug at the back it goes straight on, whereas normally you need to press the power button at the back.

Any ideas guys? Fried mobo or psu?
 
sounds to me like a faulty PSU.

or it could be somthing so simple like the power button not connected to the mobo properly.

id test the PSU if i was you, if its not that then id say its probibly some loose connections somewhere. time to get the soldering iron out.

might not be any of them, but thats what id of thaught :)

thats normal....when the power comes "on" the fans will spin...

Oh I assume (having read your thread three times) thats the fans are not switching off immediately after you power down??? if i am assuming correctly, please advise how long the fans stay on for??

I would agree with the other replies you have recieved thats its either:

a) faulty psu
b) the case connectors are incorrect

of course id check B first followed by A as its the cheaper option, good luck

I ordered a Tagan PSU, which arrived today. I was hoping i could just fit it and the comp would boot up, but no joy.

I've now got the mobo out the case, with only the PSU connected to it. When I plug in the power lead into the PSU and switch on the PSU power switch the cpu fan starts spinning, despite the front power switch not being connected.

After a lot of googling I'm pretty sure that there is a short circuit somewhere, hence why the mobo is out of the case, sitting on cardboard.

So, basically I'm clueless now. Can anyone suggest anything?
 
I have had similar problems twice - unfortunately the only way around it was to replace the mobo :(. but it COULD be the CPU - have you tried booting without a CPU? some motherboards will still give the diagnostic lights with no CPU, and if it seems to "boot" as well as it could, ie it tells you there is no CPU, then maybe the CPU is the problem.

If you have another CPU of the same socket type knocking about, try swapping it to pin down the problem.

So bottom line from me - I think its the CPU or mobo but only swaps will tell which.
 
Had same problem on 2 of my pc's at the same time

One needed new Motherboard (my old barton2500)

One sorted with a new power supply (My opteron 144).

Expensive!
