Christmas present ideas

My lads almost 9.

We've got him some electronics kit and a couple of nurf guns.

Will get him Minecraft on PC via the ms Store.

Feel like we're really struggling for ideas this year.

What are the popular toys at the moment. Feel so disconnected from stuff with COVID. Barely speak to other parents and kids.

It's been stressful getting some of it, the PS5 and NVIDIA 3070, but the only item I had to pay overs on was the X-Rocker Neo Motion LED Gaming chair. It was sold out everywhere so needed to resort to e-bay. (excluding the 3070 where OcUK added a little extra to the RRP :p)

It's a bit odd not knowing what your son wants, hasn't he expressed/shown interest in lots of things? Done a list for Santa? You've also left it really late, most of the must have things kids that age want have long been sold out, having shopped for my 8yr nephew it's a PITA.

Anything related to building.

Maybe get a nice RC car or plane kit and build it with him? They can be a little complicated for a child, but would be fantastic as a group project between the two of you. A lot of people are buying gaming consoles and PC's for their kids now and that's fair enough, but I think the RC element would get them out of the house and potentially if he gets into it, socialising with others in person once Covid is done with.
 
One the best presents i bought for my 9 year old niece a few years ago was a second hand iphone 6s for around £100
She still has it and takes it everywhere she goes

Lego. Always, always Lego. I owe more of my technical abilities to Lego than anything else. And no, I'm not joking. Pneumatics, hydraulics, gear boxes, worm drives, steering racks, gear ratios, all down to Lego.

Yes, this guy gets it. Consoles and games are cool and all, but don't teach you the stuff I listed above.

At a young age 'building' and 'playing' with stuff related to the likes of Lego can have a massive impact on the childs ability to employ things like math and engineering down the line. It's fun as hell and will have long term benefits, what's not to love!?

Get him some good board games and enjoy some time with him with electronics off over the Christmas period :)

I'd highly recommend Pandemic as a first game as it's co-op so you play along with him.
Star Wars Imperial Assault is expensive but essentially has 3 games in 1 as its a 1 v all, 1 v 1 tactical combat game and also has an app for complete co-op.
Star Realms is a super cheap 1 v 1 game that has a huge amount of replay ability.
Ticket to Ride is an excellent starting game

if you're interested also have a look into:
Marvel Champions or Marvel Legendary for a fun yet simple card game.
Kingdomino - very cheap and quick fun little domino builder.
Carcassonne - Classic tile laying game.
Stone Age - a personal favorite of mine with a bit of luck due to dice rolls
NmBr9 - complete brain burner but also very simple.

I've just ordered the Imperial Assault game. Looks amazing and we can all have some fun without a screen.
