I've had an issue with searching through the Google engine using Chrome for a while now and I'm not really sure what else I can try to fix it!

If I search (it can be via the omnibox or on Google.co.uk itself), my first request will work fine. However, once the first search has run any further attempts will cause a "This webpage is not available" error, with an Error code: ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED

  • This error has occured on numerous versions of Chrome
  • I have tried deleting all cache/cookie/history data
  • I've completed fresh installs of Chrome a number of times
  • Several DNS servers have been tried (both router and windows settings)

The only way I can get search to work again is either by:

  • Restarting chrome
  • Manually changing https:// to http://

I'm fairly certain that it's a problem with secure connections (based on my workaround), however I don't have any issues with other secure sites.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm getting bored of re-starting my browser!

Never had that on Chrome and have been using it since it existed. Sounds more like a faulty extension or some security software breaking things in the background.

Nah

Turned out to be a problem with the HTTPS protocol checking of ESET SmartSecurity v8

Turning it off fixed everything :D
