My GF is freeing up some money due to a property purchase, and has tasked me with getting her a crossfire since she started banging on about how lovely they are, and since looking at how cheap they seem to be.

No point to the thread really other than for saying OMG how cheap are they!

7 grand, on autotrader. I dread to think how much these fetch trade!

How bad are these things to only cost this, what is she letting herself (and indirectly, myself) in for? :p

I like the look of them, a lot of car for the money - a big 3.2 V6 should sound nice too.

They are actually reasonably fast reading into it;

To match the looks there is also the performance: 0-62mph takes just 6.5sec, courtesy of the Mercedes-Benz-sourced 3.2 litre V6 engine, and the top speed is electronically limited to 155mph

It doesnt really matter how it compares with other things, girls will be girls, she likes it, it fits her reduced budget, therefore she wants one and nothing else is as good in her eyes. And on the value for money thing i cant argue, its a modern (looking) sports car nearly as new as her 987 for 7 grand.

To be honest though i think i may try and convince her to get another (older) boxster. I think she would go for that.

I quite like them, don't know why. In reality, it's going to be driven on the road, slowly, by a woman no less :p . So it doesn't need to get a good time around the top gear track or have amazing performance/handling capabilities.

My thoughts exactly and why i am happy to get her one if she wants one. Good car or not i don't really care, a car is hardly for life anyway is it? If we buy it and 2 weeks later she changes her mind i will sell it.

Still going to swing the boxster idea through though, its similar to what she has now and still comes with a proper keyfob :p

There's one of these parked over the road from me. For reference, I live on a main road in the middle of a town of skag heads and old people.

It moves now and again but not much over the last two years I've lived here. Interestingly it's probably the only car that aint been stolen by "travelers" yet.

Not quite sure what i am supposed to conclude from that?

If you're buying it for the missus, it'll make a good car for her - unless she likes to compare the finer points of precision cornering and amazing handling, coupled with nimble gear changes and excellence in power delivery.

No, they aren't *that* good but who cares for the money? They look good, drive ok apparently but are for posing rather than thrashing around. £7k for that - buy it if it makes he happy.

Exactly my thoughts, the gearbox is a mercedes item so i doubt the gear changes will be either quick or precise, but it really doesnt matter, she drives at 4mph. This is not a thread about whether i should buy it anyway, i do not need others to tell me what cars to buy. The way i see it a car purchase is not something that needs to be considered too deeply, if she doesnt like it then it can be passed on :)

That said, for 7k it's worth a punt if you can get a trade deal and flog it on if you end up disagreeing with it.

What is she running around in now?

Totally :) currently she has a Porsche Boxster S 987 (2005)

Get her a Beetle Cabriolet - completely different car, but it's got bags of character and the German build quality she's used to from the Boxter. It's not a sports car but neither is the crossfire + open top motoring for the win. I'm sure anyone would tire of the crossfire long before the charm of the Beetle wore off.

mnemonix - you are bang on, strangely this is actually the other car that she likes, and wanted until she saw the price of Crossfires. I am half tempted to simply produce an older boxster though, if those crossfires really are as monumentally bad as everybody seems to be making out. The reason for the current boxster has everything to do with the fact that it was a brand new porsche, and nothing to do with how fast or good the car is.

The main issue with the crossfires is that i have no clue where to get one, other than autotrader or pistonheads, none of which are cheap enough for what is essentially an unbranded car which will lose all of its value.

The two you mentioned are the better middle ground options tbh. You cant invent value either.

Pending a test to see if this is all a fuss about nothing, and pending me finding somewhere cheaper to buy one, agreed.

Produce one? From stickyback plastic and toilet tubes? :p

Thats generally where you buy cars.

No, not from stickyback plastic and toilet tubes. And no, this is not generally where i buy cars.

No, they didnt. I have bought 3 cars from PH/AT, put of 100+, these were an Omega, an MR2T, and the S-class, the S-class only being because it was at an excellent price

Thanks for telling me how to source cars though, i clearly do not know what i am doing.

Edit, i dont mean to sound arsey, but you are coming across as patronising when you know how i source cars and where claires car is likely to come from, being patronising is supposed to be my job ;)

I said it as being a downside for the crossfire, and then had the sarcastic comments - which are not needed! (see edit above)
