I find this a little amusing. When I was at university [1999-2002 if you must know] you wouldn't been seen dead drinking cider. Now, due to the excellence of Magners' marketing dept, Magners is seen as something acceptable to drink by girls AND guys! I go to pubs all over London - esp in Summer - and see people drinking Magners and Bulmers everywhere. It's now 'ok' to drink Strongbow whereas I knew at guy at university who was told to '**** off' by a barman when he ordered it.

It's funny how drinks go in and our of fashion. Cider used to be something you only drank if you were 16 or 60.

Been drinking cider on and off for years. Provides a refreshing drink when you fancy a change from the usual.

I always drink cider and have since before bloody magners came out

Think its cos i'm from the westcountry though ;)

Strongbow > *

I agree, I also like to drink it in the summer, nice hot sunny day with a pint of chilled refreshing cider.

Cant even smell the stuff coz it takes me back to school discos and 2litres of warm Co-op cider :p

the reason ordering a cider as a student gets a hostile reactions is that it is quite easy to get horribly drunk on it especially when mixed with other drinks.I know a few bars that will not sell 'Snakebites' due to it's effect on youngsters

First time I've ever heard this?

Edit: OMG when did I make 2000 posts? This all rather passed me by.

Yeah me too. The problem I heard with snakebite (now drunk regularly again but it was banned for a time IIRC) was having no mixer with two alcoholic substances.

Hence diesel :)

I've always been a cider drinker. I remember when you could buy it in chippys and it was treated a bit like pop by some shops. I've tried Magners but I much prefer Katy.

I usually have Olde English when drinking out, it doesn't seem to give you as bad a hangover as most.

a lot of my friends have started drinking cider more and more, I cant stand the stuff but its definitely been on the up!

Heheheh, totally agree wioth the OP. I find it amusing when the once shunned becomes fashionable and the shunners themselves suddenly have no recollection of the shunning itself :D

Students were famous for this in my experience, music is another classic example.

It's true, the Magners marketing dept has done a fantastic job. To be fair though, it tastes a hell of a lot better than blackthorn/strongbow.

It tastes different to Strongbow, I wouldn't say it was particularly better

Magners was popular before the adverts you're referring to as well

There are a few bars and pubs in London that won't serve snakebite for that reason.

From Wikipedia:

In some jurisdictions, places that serve beers, wines, or ciders require an additional or different liquor license to serve mixed drinks. As a result, some bars and pubs do not serve snakebites, stating it would be illegal to do so. Others sell the individual components for the drink, but will not served them mixed.

However, it is far more common for a proprietor to refuse to serve snakebites because some people tend to drink then quickly and become drunk and belligerent, rather than there being a legal prohibition against it.

Ive drank cider for a few years now, think even before Magners came into the public eye. Mainly because I dont like lager or bitter though.
