I'm looking to purchase a Cigar (Or pack of 5/10) and I have not got a clue which ones to buy. I have a budget of around £25 per cigar. I have looked over at http://www.simplycigars.co.uk and a few other sites but I'm not sure which type/brand to choose.

It will be my first cigar, that will be saviored until the bud has gone whilst celebrating at my school leaving ball in May.

Any help will be much appreciated
Thanks

Romeo y Julieta are a good cigar to start with, don't try and smoke a Cohiba as your first cigar like I did though.

you might want to try it before you try it infront of people, so you don't look like a total goon choking and spluttering.

Remember to only take a little bit back, not like a fag.

can anyone recommend a nice cuban for people who havent smoked them before, its for a celebration? Either to buy here or in spain. Nothing too expensive, but would be nice to be cuban or cuban size cigar, if you understand.

Romeo y Julieta.

that does seem to come up quite a lot! they seem to be around 20 quid a pop? is that correct?

Are these a common cigar that can be found in duty free at air ports and when abroad?

Yes, although it depends on the size of the airport ;) (and don't bother looking if you're in the US). The reason people reccommend R&J for a starter is that they are on the milder side, as mentioned previously if you go for a Cohiba you'll end up coughing explosively.....

Things to remember:

  • You'll need to get hold of a cigar cutter or get the shop to do it for you. Chomping the end off and spitting it out a la Hollywood is a no no.
  • Don't use a zippo or petrol lighter to light it. The flavour of petrol does not add to the experience.
  • Whilst I'm on the subject of lighting them, you don't light a cigar as you would a ciggie. Apply the flame (match or gas lighter) to the end of the cigar first, rotating the cigar whilst doing it. Once the end is blackened and you have the appearence of embers on the edge, draw down gently to ensure you have an even burn.
  • Whatever you do, don't inhale. Seriously. You'll end up crying.

Nope. If you are after a Churchill (one of the biggest sizes) then maybe, however a Coronas #1 (still decently big) will set you back about £13 online. To be honest, of you are looking for a few "trial" cigars you could do a lot worse than looking at Simply Cigars. I'm sure others can reccomend other good online sites, but I've always had good service from them.

Are there any reasonably cheap cigars which are any good, perhaps in the £10 - £15 range?

Cigars are a bit like wine for me. If you don't really have a great understanding or a very knowledgeable pallet (which 90% of people don't, even if they claim to), then you can almost go for anything over a certain price. At least that's why I do!

I find the common and classic Montecristo does the job most of the time. Cue people slagging them off! ;)

Edit: Semi-OT, does anybody here smoke a pipe? I'm only 23 but got bought one for my birthday a few years ago (a kind of 'what to buy the guy that has everything' present). I only whip it out on special occasions but it's quite fun and while the novelty is probably the highlight of it it's great.

Edit II: I don't and never have smoked cigarettes by the way, so I don't think pipes are that harsh really.

(good etiquette given in this site)

Make sure you get a light leaf, the darker cigar will be too much for a starter.
