Cigars?

Are there any reasonably cheap cigars which are any good, perhaps in the £10 - £15 range?

A Romeo y Julietta Tubo No.2 is a pretty cheap cigar, comes in a petite corona format and you get the distinctive floral notes that makes them quite enjoyable. They are also quite mild so wont make you sick if you dont smoke cigars often. You can buy a box of 25 for around £60 (not at UK prices though)

Hoyo de Monterrey is another brand that is distinctly floral which is a very nice smoke, I really like the petite robusto but the Epicure is supposed to be great aswell.

Montecristo No.4 is another petite corona which is very popular and is the best selling cuban cigar bar none.

I tend to smoke Montecristo's mostly, with the occasional Romeo y Julietta and very occasionally one of the few Cohiba's I have left if its a special occasion. Montecristo's are pretty mild and a nice easy smoke - good for easing yourself in, and they're not going to break the bank either.

If you're just starting with cigars I'd agree that a Montecristo no.4 is a good bet, or, as others have said one of the Romeo Y Julietta range.

Although I smoke cigars very rarely (and don't smoke cigarettes at all) I enjoy Cohibas, particularly the Lanceros for some reason - I must have got a taste for them during a holiday to Cuba a couple of years ago.

What are they like compared to cigarettes? Are they as harmful and addictive?

Smoking wise they arent comparable. Non smokers will say smoking is smoking but thats like saying people that like drinking a beer like drinking meths.

Cigars is like wine. Cigars have different flavour notes and finish. Under specific conditions in a humidor cigars age and change in flavour.

That said, smoking in what ever form is harmful. The only real difference is that you dont take the smoke down on a cigar. Are they addictive ? I couldnt say as I dont smoke that many. I used to smoke about 2 a month but havent smoked one for about 8 months because I havent fancied one for a while despite having two humidors.

Cheers for the advice about cheap cigars.
Currently considering getting 1xMontecristoNo4 and 1xRomeoyJulietaNo.2Tubos-1's
Does that sound like a reasonable start?

I dont think you can go wrong with them two. They arent too large that you will be smoking them for ages, nor too strong that they might make you feel sick and you will get a feel whether you enjoy them or not.

You can get them cheaper on other sites btw.

Do a quick Google shopping search, especially if you're thinking of buying more than 1 or a whole 10 pack later on.

If there is a reliable alternative to simply cigars please let me know the url, I doubt they are a competitor to OcUK ;).

cigars in the UK are a funny one, they are seriously expensive due to the tax and we have an obsession with Cuban cigars to the point where buying a decent non-cuban is pretty difficult. I guess it's because the price difference bettween a decent non-cuban and a cuban is so small due to the high taxation that we are unwilling to take a chance.

the recomendations in this thread will see you nicely satisfied with your first cigar, failing that if your just trying to look cool get some hamlet from the offy and call it quits.

Cheers for the links I just noticed this (Christmas Cigar selection) which looks pretty interesting and a good starter pack might take me a while to get through though.

Any chance of seeing some peoples humidors?

I'm meaning to get one, to add to my pretentious shelf (where I keep my good booze, it's purely for my own ego - I love it), but wouldn't really use it (nor be able to stock it very well.
I love travelling to places where they have them in bars, something very 'James Bondish' about the whole thing that pleases me (and my pretentious inner core).

Here is mine, from Cuban Crafters after a recommendation from Bear:

Sorry about the iphone picture quality.

Personally I prefer a cigar punch to a cutter, but it can depend on the type of cigar you smoke.

Motecristo No.4 are a good choice. You'll notice some on my top layer.
