I'm looking to buy some cigars for me upcoming wedding in August and the men's favours are going to contain cigars. I'd like large-sized cigars, ideally a recognizable brand that come in individual tubes so that they last a few months, rather than me buying them a safe time in advance and them all being dry on the day.

Budget is ideally a fiver per cigar, maybe going up to £8 each. I've done some searching online and have found a Spanish website that seems to be much cheaper than buying from the UK (thus making my budget more realistic), but it's hard to tell if they use the word 'tube' to mean the cigar itself, rather than it being in a tube. Any cigar afficionados able to provide some recommendations? I'm looking based on price and showy appearance I'm afraid, rather than the flavour.

Cheers

If you ever go to france, you can get great deals on cigars.

I doubt they are of great quality, but in most tobacco shops you can get individually tubed cigars for around 3 euros.

The only problem is that they are in france.

Where do you live ? If near Braintree there's an old Tobacconist that sells a mean cigar & will help you in your choice.
Hope it's still there as I haven't been passed it in about 20 year. :p

Either way just find an old school tobacconist & get a hand rolled Cuban that you like the smell of.

I live in Sunderland, but I think there might be a tobacconist in Newcastle, which is easy enough to get to. It was the budget I was concerned about - is £5-8 realistic in a UK shop?

Unfortunately I think you will need to up your budget if you want anything that will be semi decent. You will get nothing from Cuba for that price so you want to be looking at cigars from other South American countries like Mexico or Honduras.

You need to spend around 15-20 quid for a decent smoke mate. Go in with a hundred quid & get 5, You won't regret it when you pass a few round & spark up.

last cubans i picked up where some romeo Y julieta churchills and they where £15 each, and thats going back a couple of years.

Should only need 30 cigars, but £15 a pop is a lot of money out of our budget. I kind of suspected that it would end up at this price, hence the Spanish website (e-tobaccos.com) being a way of bringing the price down.

Take a look at Simply Cigars website. You can get some nice Cigars at nice prices and it doesn't have to be Cuban. An expensive Cigar doesn't mean it tastes and smokes as good as a cheaper Cigar. It's all down to personal taste.

If you're looking for a softer "starter" cigar I would go for something like Monte Cristo, or if you're looking for something with a stronger, richer flavour then I've always been partial to a Cohiba.

Of course like other people have said if you can find a proper tobacconist they will be happy to steer you in the right direction.

I think what I'm looking for is something that smokers and non-smokers will be happy to receive. As I told my fiancee, every bloke, whether or not a smoker, would like to have a nice-looking cigar-inna-tube lying on the sideboard (assuming it's not smoked at the wedding) for the time they get drunk enough to fancy a cigar. No-one is likely to be among the cognoscenti who recognize the subtleties - it's all about image on this occasion.

I realise it's champagne tastes with 'pint of john smith's' money, but i reckon there's got to be something out there.

EDIT - to go back to my first post, does anyone know if these are in individual tubes, or if the 'tubes' bit means the cigar itself?

The exchange rate is awful at the moment. I usually pick up some Montecristo 4's for the end of year at uni and they used to be ~£8 each but have gone up to around £10 these days.

OK, first of all, the site you want to use is

www.topcubans.com

Based in Geneva, their prices are pretty much the best on the market. I have ordered maybe 30 times from them in the past year, as well as various friends and family, and everything has always been perfect with them.

The Bolivars you linked are indeed in tubes. There is no cigar type that is called a 'tube' so anytime you see tube or tubos you're going to be getting what it is you want. Bolivars are also some of the strongest cigars you're going to buy, anyone non-smokers will no doubt head into a fit of coughing unfortunately.

Here is my suggestion

http://www.topcubans.com/cuban-cigars/romeo-no.1-tubos-(box-of-10),604.htm

It ticks every one of your boxes. Its in a tube, its a recognizable brand, it has a decent amount of size, its a cuban, and price works out to £3.70 a cigar. For that they are, I have a couple in my humidor, I wouldn't call them anything I would rave over, however, I would definitely enjoy one if given to me.

If you were willing to go unto £8 each for the cigar, then you could enjoy one of my favourite go to cigars:

There is a lot more to see on that site, but the Romeo No. 1 ia the only one within the small budget you're really going to find. Feel free to send me one as a thank you :D

I'd recommend using cgarsltd.co.uk.

Firstly, a warning;
Tubes will not keep your cigars safe. They are for safe packaging, and will only keep them at their best for about a week or so. I do not recommend leaving a load of nice cigars in the packaging tubes up until August, especially not for wedding favours that have cost a fair bit!!!

I'd suggest getting a humidifier pouch, they're cheap and the larger bags can keep about 25 cigars fresh for 90 days or so.

This is perfect:

Now that the safety caution is out of the way, onto the cigars! £5 per cigar isn't a great deal for a nice cigar. Anyway...

Start by narrowing down your choices by getting rid of any full flavoured cigars. Any guest that hasn't smoked before, might not like the experience at all. It's like drinking a mug full of espresso, when you only like caffè latte. I'd recommend getting a mild or medium flavoured cigar. I know people have suggested Bolivar already in this thread, and it's nothing against them, but I don't think these are suited flavourwise to beginners who might be put off by the overly strong taste.

As for size, a 5 inch cigar is somewhat a standard size for a beginner or casual smoke. I'd recommend looking at petit coronas, don't go too thin, but don't think that you need to go and buy a seven inch Winston Churchill thick-as-your-**** cigar in order for it to be good!

My recommendations:

The Monecristo No. 5. It's a nice all round cigar, very popular for novices but it's also one of the most popular cigars in the world for aficionados too. It's a little bit smaller than it's big brother the No. 4 - and given the budget I'd say go for the No. 4 - at 4". Don't be put off by this though, smoking normally and savouring it will still last a good 20-30 minutes.

The price of 25 works out at about £7.40 per cigar.

The No. 4 on the other hand is the most popular cigar in the world, and rightly so. Ignore any reviews of this cigar saying that it's "best years were in 06 and 07, the fact is unless your guests have got one to compare or are aficionados themselves, they aren't going to care in the slightest. You have to be a real expert to even notice (I'm not saying I am, it's just logic), and of course have the budget to buy the comparisons!

http://www.cgarsltd.co.uk/montecristo-cigars-p-153.html

The No. 4 is measured at about 5 and a bit inches, and costs about £9 per cigar. Over your budget I know, but totally worth it! I've just bought a load of No. 4's myself, you'll be hard pushed to find anyone that doesn't like them (of course only if they like smoking the things in the first place).

Finally, the Cohiba Panetelas. It's a half corona size at 4 1/2" but nothing else comes close at this size and price! Just read the reviews on the website. It works out at £8.30 per cigar. I'm sure you could probably haggle a lot of tobacconists down.

Good luck! Hope this helps.
