Cineworld preparing to file for bankruptcy

Have you thought about not going on opening night?

Kids films have kids in them at the start, but after a film is 1.5 weeks old, you'll find screens 15 percent capacity, so plenty space to be away from others.

It's been a long time since I saw a film less than a week after release for the reasons you list above.
I never go during opening weekend. In the past, I go three weeks after release. Even been to a U/PG film showing at 1pm on a school day and there're are school aged kids. If they are ill, don't take them to the cinema.

Same here, really. Last movie we saw at the cinema was (I think) the first Halloween reboot.

For the money the experience isn't all that great. Uncomfortable seats and sticky floor. Overpriced food and drink, unless you sneak your own in.

Often the picture is poorly focused or the sound distorted and as (apparently) things are just digitally streamed like a kind of giant Netflix there's little the projectionist can do about it.
Then there's the sitting through 40 minutes of adverts aimed at 16 - 24 year olds and the previews.
That's before the distraction of fellow viewers and their annoying habits.

As others have said, much of the content is now remakes, reboots, sequels or the dregs of DC and Marvel and I've never been a fan of comic book stuff (well apart from the Dandy, Beano and Buster & Jet).

So I'm afraid it's just so more pleasurable to sit at home on the recliner watching the movie on a 65" OLED screen.

just watched ster trek original motion picture at cinema last night.

had to go odeon as that's where my dad goes and it was with him.

cost me about £13 for the ticket, and £2 to park, so £15 to watch the film.

if i had gone to cineworld, it'd cost nothing as parking is free, and cineworld allow meerkat movies to match with the unlimited card, so you get 1 free ticket a week, unlike odeon which don't do that.

the seats were the most uncomfortable i've experienced in ages. leg room bad. arm rests sharp and horrible to lean on.

i don't see why anyone would chose that cinema over cineworld. i would put odeon as a 4/10 and cineworld 8/10, and it's cheaper.

also a a side note, that movie was a slog :p never seen it before. impressive what they did for the time, but by god have things come a long way since then,

The movies are not streamed, they are DCPs (Digital cinema package)

As for everything being Marvel, reboots etc well that’s patently just not true. Sure, they take up a lot of screens when they open but there’s plenty of other choice if you take a minute to find it.

Best seat's are in Showcase and I agree with you Odeon not that good prefer Vue.

Same experience as well. The Cineworld we go to has of the most comfortable seats. They still have premier leather seats which use to cost extra Now it's free. Leather reclining seats with extra leg and seat room.

Just a few observations:

1) For the most part I find the seats fine - especially if you go for the VIP ones!
2) You don't have to sneak your own food in - Cineworld reserve the right to refuse entry with hot food or alcohol but that's it!
3) Never had an issue with a fuzzy screen
4) If the ad's annoy you so much, just go in 30 minutes late - it's all assigned seating so shouldn't be an issue!
5) Nothing you can do if you don't like being near other people but I personally find that it enhances the experience sometimes!
6) Choice of content is a purely personal choice - I wouldn't go to the cinema either if I wasn't bothered about the film!?!?

On the whole I'll be gutted if Cineworld go pop - some films are just soooo much better in the cinema imo!

As a student to my mid 20s, I went to 2 films one after the other. As the cinemas at the time, only showed ticket to staff at the entrance to 5-6 screens. If you time it well, you can sneak into another film in the other 4-5 screens in the area. Helps if there're loos in the section too. As just nip into the loos before seeing the 2nd film.

I did this about 15 times and never got caught.

Not bad at all :D

It can't survive in its current form. 5bn debts all need paying off within the next few years from buying out the competition and another 1bn from failing to buy another chain. Massively hiking up ticket prices to £15 in areas where they have no competition while keeping them low (£6) in areas where there's another cinema. Spent a fortune refurbing most of their screens pre-covid but the sites haven't been looked after. They had the cheek to issue more shares during covid to keep them afloat and those are the people who are going to lose out.

Back in the news again today:

Will have to see how much longer they stay open or if they can find a buyer.

It's not the core business that's the issue but their huge debt mountain. They are going into administration to restructure their debt so that the new business can continue - I think they have give up on finding a buyer.

I had made 20% on my shares but forgot to sell them in time and now have an 85% loss.. lol.:p

Is this a sign of how the majority of cinema chains will end up or is it specific to Cineworld do we think? Whenever we go to cinema - admittedly not a lot - they are literally dead. Shame because I like our local Cineworld. If you think back to the 90s when Cinemas were buzzing, we are a far cry from that since we can consume content on large screen TVs at home.

I think we're reaching a sensible middle ground. If you look at particular titles like Super Mario then big releases are still making fortunes for the studios. On the other hand, a middle-budget title, a drama title or something can struggle to get the right marketing and pull in crowds and will struggle to make it's budget back. I know for me, I'm perfectly happy watching 'smaller' movies at home. Take for example A Good Person; I'm a big Zach Braff (and Florence Pugh) fan, but I couldn't make the time to get to the cinema and support it. It's completely the type of film that in the back of my mind I knew I'd be fine watching at home. That's a shame, but also the reality. Let's look at upcoming releases like Mission Impossible and Oppenheimer before we start debating if cinemas are dead :D

To me the issue isn't directly 'we can watch at home on a big screen' but more that watching at cinema doesn't add anything, and not in fact can be worse.

It's 2023 and still you have to share arm ****ING rests with the person sat next to you. They can't give you your own 2 arm rests ffs!

Although perfectly comfortable, the sears are still pretty basic. What about adding a proper foot rest to their seats? What about reducing the seating capacity by 15 percent and making a bit more room for everyone. How about not charging £9 for a drink and pop corn. £4 should be the price, with their unlimited car ld then it's £3.50. I don't even like pop corn but at that price I'd buy just for the classic cinema experience. How about free pop corn and drink for every ticket showing on a quiet Monday?

How about every Saturday they have an old movie showing thsts long gone from cinema and it comes with a free snack.

How about forcing Marvel to stop showing content right at the end of their credits. At home I can skip them to get to the clip. Cinema I wait 15 minutes.

They should also be making serious deals with local food places. Date night food and movie £15 each every Thursday.

There's so much more cinema should be doing to get us out. I love cinema, and love getting my groups together to watch movies, but it's just such a naff experience now in comparison to what it should be, I've lost more and more of my group and it's to the point now that unless it's a major film, most won't go.

I have been with them for over 25 years when Cineworld was bought from Virgin Cinemas. So it be a right shame if they had to go.

I'll be honest I'd never heard of them until about 4 or 5 years ago but then that's probably because my local area only seemed to have Vues and the likes.

Do you know how businesses make money ?
