MCB's have a service short circuit breaking capacity, meaning they'll take the short circuit current but they're not guarenteed to work afterwards.

It's entirely possible the MCB tripped under short circuit and became damaged. The circuit fault could have cleared itself as a result of the short circuit but still leave a fault on the circuit.

I'm suprised the sparky didn't do any further investigation as to why the MCB tripped in the 1st place and at least do end to end, r1+r2 and insulation resistance tests as a minimum on the socket circuit to establish that the circuit was safe to put back into service......but you'll not get that for 30 quid.

EDIT......In fact even changing a MCB, the work should be covered under a minor works certificate and he should have done those tests and issed a certificate.

Because you get a lot of cowboy electricians unfortunately.

And... just as unfortunate, people just don't see why electrical work is the costs it can be. Which I can understand because its all hidden behind walls etc and its bits of paper that doesnt mean much to most people.
