Circular Polariser Filters

Linear polarizers are more effective but are generally no-no for autofocus SLR cameras.

Just bought a couple of the same in 72mm and 77mm. Not the cheapest filters in the world

Cheers for the tips. Will experiment a bit later on.

You won't regret it and you won't want to take them off your lenses either. :)

Be careful with that 77mm, i'm on my second now after the first was destroyed when some crazy kid jumped out of no where and head butted my camera.

yup, i've found that now! :(

I find that I have to focus the camera first, then twist *** polariser to get the desired effect *after* i've focused! :(

I assume that a circular polariser will keep the image constantly polarised through my viewfinder?

Most TTL metering and focus sensors in autofocus cameras using split beam or mirror already have their own polarizers so in theory if you start turning your linear polarizer at some angle cameras own sensor will enter cross polarized spot and see no light at all, that will lead to problems with metering and focus or at least the readings will be highly inconsistant. Circular polarizers have extra quarter wave layer to fix that problem - turning circular polarizer will not change exposure reading, just the effect...

Is there anything in Photoshop that can artificially recreate the effect of a polarising lens on a pic taken without a filter?

Some effects, like deep shades of the sky (see below) etc yes

Other effects - like reduction of light reflections on water or glass (see cheesy pic below) not, simply because it's not captured in the picture to enhance

I am waiting for delivery of a Hoya Pro1 CPL, hopefully it will be good. I got it to go on my Canon 50mm so I got the 52mm CPL (I just hope it is the right size as I am a noob)

I like the example pics above, glad I made the purchase :)

Had a few days to experiment and as Scuzi says the best effect is at right angles to the sun. One disadvantage though - you lose a one or two stops of light.

how well do cpl work with p&s cameras ??? i have a pana fz50 due to arrive soon and am just wonder if it will work as well as some of the pics on here have :)

As far as I know you can't get them for p&s cameras. You could always get one and hold it in front of the lens though!

well the panasonic fz50 am looking at has the filter threads (size 55mm) and i have found the Hoya PRO-1D CPL 55mm for about £25 so am going to order one when i get some more memory i went to dpreview.com and the panasonic guys use it with great effect :p :)

I take it this is purely because the filter rotates during focus? I was thinking of getting a linear polarizer for my Sigma as it doesn't rotate during focus.

Not quite, it's because of possible metering and focusing issues (as mentioned in post nr. 25 of this thread).

Me too, thread just reminded me I don't have one at 77mm for the 5D 24-105 combo I'm picking up Thursday.....

Found the 77mm one for £45 posted, and located in the UK...the rrp of £125 a bit
HK slighly cheaper, but I can't wait !!! LOL

I had to get one from a high street store last year, it was just shy of 200 pounds!!! Luckily my work picked up the bill for my HK brought filter which was broken in the line of duty (damn kids).
