Hi all,

Probably overkill for a lot of people, but I've just ordered the above combination and will be using it on my Sky Fibre Pro connection.

A friend uses it, gets 55mbps sync, his neighbour with a HH5 gets 35mbps. So I'm hoping my 40 odd goes back up to 60 odd when I first got my connection put in.

I'll post updates how I get on. For anyone interested, I paid £440 in total for refurbished items with a years warranty.

Are you familiar with the OS on them? I had a play with a cisco router and couldn't get my head round it at all :D

I find the Cisco os very good to use. It's all command prompt so if ever have used any type before you should be able to pick it up

I'm using a 1921 but can't justify the EWIC yet so using the openreach modem still. That said, it's proving a bit noisier than is like so might swap for an 887VA instead. Mines on BT Infinity though but get about 68/18mb when I last looked. I could also try a 1941 as got some at work.

The 1921 has a variable speed fan and I don't think it can be adjusted in anyway.

Yes, I know Cisco IOS quite well.

Hmm, this may be a factor then. My current entry point is in a little room where my server, a Cisco switch and my NAS are. It gets warm, but not warm enough to cause any issues with the equipment. I have however been wanting to move the router to the front door where the BT line comes in as I get a few more mb syn out of it.

I wasn't sure the 887VA could take a WIC though?

Not sure why I struggled really - grew up with Basic and DOS etc. and I'm fine with BladeOS so not sure why the cisco foxes me!

The 887VA has the multimode modem built into it, can do ADSL or VDSL. My only hangup with it is it only has 100Mb ports where the 1921 has GB. I've seen quite a blog posts etc that show the throughput of it handles FTTC speeds fine.

Just out curiosity, how have you setup your security with this combination? I am looking at something similar myself using a Huawei HG612.

Do you run the firewall on the modem still?

To be honest ive not played too much with the security side. Have ACL on router and software firewall on main PC. I might look to get a small firewall at some point. I upgraded the firmware on the HG612 but avent touched it for about 18 months now.

Thanks for the info. Are you running a seperate switch from the 1921 also or just using the switchports on the router itself?

Cisco IOS is probably the best CLI I've used, and I've used a few over the years (mainly Solaris and various Linux distros. If you can do Basic, IOS will be simple. Tab and ? are your friend.

I'll just have to hope that the noise of the 1921 isn't too bad. :) If it is, I don't mind the 100mb between the router and my switch as the external WAN post is only 100mb anyway so the 887VA may be a suitable candidate.

my setup is HG612>1921>HP 1410-16G switch

How do you find the noise with it so close? Is it just like a normal hum from a PC?

i should really move it into the garage or somewhere lke that, just not got the time at the moment. Ive dug out an 887VA and its virtually silent compared to the 1921 (fan is running medium speed currently)
I will swap over later as kids currently both online now.

I've also got a 1921 running my infinity 2 connection using the OR supplied ECI modem. (ECI>1921>HP1910G8>DAP-2695)

Ironic that I've been looking at the VDSL EHWIC card just this week. (in case the ECI modem packs in) Noise wise mine is moderate. If the fan speed remains on low it is very quiet but once it rises it is quite noticeable. (nowhere near catalyst 25xx/35xx loud but certainly enough)

1921 has arrived, well, it's at the sorting office. Off to pick it up soon so if I get time tonight I'll give it a crack of getting working with my HG612.
