hi guys

My new gigabit switch just arrived :D (Cisco Linksys SPS2024)

However as i am experimenting with managed switches, i have a really nooby question :/

I cant work out how to 'manage' the switch, i.e get into the WEB UI that it has to configure it. I know i can do it by the 'console' serial connection on the front but i don't have the right cable :/

i assume that it is possible to configure it over the network?

if so how can i achieve this? i have looked under network in windows explorer and its not listed there :L

if not what cable do i need to manage it from the console port?

sorry again for the noob question :L

cheers

Windows explorer? :p

Configuration and monitoring from a console port with the CLI or from a standard web browser with WebView management

You should be able to telnet to it if you know its IP. You will need a serial cable if you wish to connect via the console.

cheers that worked, however its asking for a username and password, however i cannot see one on the device at all :/ i bought it off ebay,

also my router was at 192.168.1.254 before, how will i access that now?

great that worked :)

i have changed the ip of the router.

when i try and log into the switch, it only loads some parts of the page, i.e it only loads the titles of the sections but if you click on them it takes you no where just stays on a basically blank screen....

any ideas?

sounds like a browser issue, are you using IE or something else ? I remember a Linksys device I used didnt like Google Chrome so had to use IE.

First thing I would have done is reset the switch to factory default - should be a hardware reset somewhere and check what the latest firmware is on Linksys website.

(btw often tells you default IP on label underneath)

yeh ive tried chrome and IE, in IE it didnt even display the sub menu hyperlinks at the top :/

yes i tried to look for a factory reset button, couldnt find one though.... the only thing that could maybe be it was a hole in the side with a padlock symbol next to it?

cheers

right i have sorted the problem by using compatibility mode in IE

However i now have another problem in that everything seems to be running reeeeeeeaalllyyyy sloowwwlllyyy :(

i am copying a 11gb mkv file to a server from my computer and im getting around 10megabytes/second!! which is terrible for gigabit ethernet, before on the unmanaged switch i was getting over 100megabytes/second.

jumbo frames are enabled on all the NIC's, however i dont know how to enable it on the switch, im pretty sure it supports it though....

I am assuming its something i havent set up properly thats making it so slow?

any help would be greatly appriciated :)

cheers

Both NICs negotiated at 1000Mb/s?

if it's a managed switch you may have QoS setup issues. Enable jumbo frames if possible, check the diagnostics log and see if it's throwing any issues up.
