Cisco or check point exams?

Depends where you want to go and how familiar you are with the devices.

Perhaps a CCNA to consolidate your knowledge. Then move up to the security devices (Check Points / ASA / etc).

It depends why you want to do it, if it's for career prospects then cisco is the industry standard obviously. However their exams are very much teaching you how to do what yuo need it on cisco kit, they're pretty light on theory stuff....

I know nothing about checkpoint exams however...

Im doing a CCNA, its looks OK but i need to get my head around subnetting EG:

stuff like that, although thats an easy one. Is there an easy way to remeber stuff like that, like a table with them all on which would be easy to recreate at an exam. how do you guys do it? (dont say use a calculator)
And remembering subnetting with VLSM's.

/28 is 1111 0000, so 0-15 (16 IP's per subnet)

eighth subnet (not inc subnet zero) = 9 x 16 = 144

144 - 2 (1 for broadcast, 1 as we start at 0 not 1) = 142

192.168.10.142

although yes i'd use a calculator :P

If you are looking at Security Exams and work with Check Point then do the CCSA and CCSE exams.

Check Point are the most highly regarded certifications by the employers.

From what i've heard they have brought some material down from the CCNP, probably because more and more people were taking the qualification so it's value was perhaps degrading.

They dumped the stuff which was so old no one used it anymore basically, there is some filtering down from the CCNP, mainly because new higher end stuff is filtering into the CCNP....

Had a very brief look, from v3.1 it seems they dropped ISDN, added VOIP, some security stuff and a bit of practical theory. Redoing my cert as its expired so i'll get a better look tonight when my books arrive :D
