Cities in Motion code - survey‏

I've got the e-mail today. Read it and I need to install another trashy Steam wannabe client so i've not bothered.

I've just started the download and did not have to get any other client? Simple 10 second registration to the site, put in your code then hit download.

Unless something else is required on installation...

Bit of an own goal really for them as I was hoping to get it working on Steam and then buy the addons!
Does anyone know if I can hook it into Steam?

No, actually you don't, although I don't know why I'm bothering to tell you.

Got my code today, downloading now. Do you recommend the sandbox mode over the others Huw?

I haven't tried the campaign or scenarios yet; I usually only play sandbox mode in games like this so I've just jumped straight in. I definitely recommend you do the tutorials though.

Found the game a bit too hands off for my liking, also I didn't really understand where to place the routes and why I was placing a route in a particular area.

Like there was no way of knowing where was a good place to put a route, it was a bit suck it and see, or I might have missed something.

Eames, yeah, you've missed a wealth of useful data; I'm guessing you didn't use the minimap filters? There's a little icon to the right of the minimap that filters both it and the main map in numerous different ways. For example, it can show you concentrations of housing, workplaces, shopping centres etc. You can even break it down by population type, e.g. pensioners, blue collar workers etc. This little tool is a goldmine and is exactly what you need to plan your routes effectively.

As for it being too hands-off, personally I think it's just right, however I wouldn't mind being able to fine-tune certain parts of my routes. But that's a minor gripe. Give it another bash!

OK I'm getting the hang of this now. Eames, and anyone else who's yet to give it a serious go, every single bit of info you could possibly want is available somewhere. Along with the map data covered in my previous post, there's also the buttons running down the left of the screen, like HQ, roster panel and so on.

The HQ button is brilliant. Its first tab shows you what you're spending your money on each month, and where it's coming in. A balance sheet, essentially. At first I wasn't sure why I was running at a loss until I examined this, and realised that my best bet for improving cashflow was to make more money on the buses (I only run buses so far) and spend less on wages. So off I went to another tab on the HQ screen, Company Policy. You can set all kinds of options in here. I used it to reduce my drivers' wages a bit, increase the wages of my inspectors (to make more money in fines) and increase ticket prices. At the moment the economy is booming so people have more spare cash to spend on travel.

Everything has associated data that you can examine. Click on a vehicle in the world, for example, then click the little clipboard that appears on the camera view, and you'll see how much money that vehicle made last month, how much was spent maintaining it, etc.

Oh, the roster screen is ace too. Within it you can get a breakdown of not only every vehicle and what it's doing to affect your cashflow, but also every stop of every route - how busy the stop is, how many passengers handled, average happiness of passengers using that stop, which line the stop is on, etc. You can even sort the tables by any of these categories!

Thanks to all of that, I've been able to tweak my business so that it's now running £1,000 a month better than it was, all without adjusting a single line or vehicle. Loving this game!

I'll start again tomorrow I think. Started the campaign that that starts with Berlin and within about an hours play time I had 100s of people queueing everywhere :/ maybe I was a bit trigger happy placing too many stops? Even though I failed hard, its extremely addictive and quite good fun! I'll give it another try tomorrow.

When you're placing the stops it shows you the coverage in a white circle; no point in overlapping those as far as I can tell. Try adding more vehicles to the route instead. Oh, and don't forget to make another route that's the reverse of an existing one.

Anyone else also get Volvo: The Game? I've just created my account so it couldn't have come from anywhere else.

Haha, are they still doing that? Yeah I got mine when I created my account years ago. I didn't bother downloading it. :)

I got my key too. Downloaded very fast and installed fine but I haven't tried it yet. Noticed there was a patch so will get that before I try it later.

Started to get the hang of it. I was going wrong by making the lines too long, you get far better results by linking much smaller lines. I'm still getting some bottle necks at some of the linking stops but its far more manageable. Just need to start making more money now!
