Cities: Skylines

Yeah, its not. But i think most people have done so because they feel the Deluxe price is still fair, its not £30 vs £35, its £23 & £30 RRP and about 25% cheaper from retailers.

£22 is a good price, and i think people appreciate that, regardless of a cheaper alternative being better value for money.

Have you guys seen this yet?
25-tiles.jpg

(full gallery here)

25 tiles mod already available on the workshop. You can see their progress in the original 3x3 area, and then with the mod area unused so far.

Im actually hoping that before too long there's either a trainer available, or i'll look into memory editing, in order to give myself extra cash resources so that i can try to create a map using the map editor, and then going into the game itself to place a series of smaller roads and stuff like that (you can only place highways & offramps in the map editor). No buildings, just dirt tracks, winding country roads along a coastline etc.

Doing this will allow me to create a savegame where the only mod activated is the 25-tiles, then it can be uploaded to the workshop and used as a semi-authored map.
The need for a trainer/mem editor would simply be to pay for the smaller roads. I'd save the game leaving the cash at the regular starting amount, as opposed to using no cheats and being 20k worse off to start with, or using unlimited money and imposing that on future games.

Thought I'd ask here, rather than create a new thread:
Never played a city building type game before new'ish to PC, but seems like good fun.
So was just wondering; Would you recommend this?

Or are there other good city sims out there?

I am looking forward to this. I have not played it, but it looks fantastic and a lot of the previews are looking positive.

Do. Not. Buy. SimCity.

Based on everything I've seen, I'd say yes. I guess if you're unsure you may want to hold fire until reviews are out, but people have been streaming for a week and I think we've got a good idea of what to expect. I'd say its the best out there at the moment (again, based on what I've seen and admittedly I've not played it), and I'd say it doesn't appear overly complicated for a beginner.

Have been watching a few videos of this. Really just want to have a go myself.
Couldn't be bothered/no time to sit down a research whether there are others out there that are good.

I've heard plenty of people say steer clear of Sim City, so I haven't really bothered to look at that.

If you're looking to buy one, it certainly seems like a good bet.

The current alternatives:
SimCity (2013) really wasnt popular, the maps too small being the biggest issue. Its also flawed in its traffic, the city gets absolutely bombarded with cars and the map area only has 1 or 2 highways as the way in & out of the city (2 requires the highway to run through the middle, which isnt much better either). Its too easy to be successful, and so its not popular for people who want a challenge.

Cities XL/XXL (not the same ppl as Skylines) is popular for its size, but thats about it. Its a poor simulation, has god awful GUI (no GUI designer), its flaws have been there for each version they've released too. I think its considered a 'city painter' really.

Cities Skylines, we wont know till tomorrow cos its not out to anyone but a load of youtubers, but the complaints have generally been minor and largely due to bad design choices, but the overall feeling is that people are really happy with it. The map sizes are 9x bigger than SimCity, bigger than XL/XXL (about 25% bigger i think) and theres already a mod which removes the 9 tile limit (tile = 2x2km) and lets you use all 25 tiles, rather than saying you can branch out from the tile you started with, by buying 8 more tiles in any direction (3x3, L shape, zig-zag etc).
One common comment has been that its too easy to make money, keep people happy. Probably not an issue for a newcomer, but thats also something that can be modded (harder mode), and theres also an unlimited money mod too, if all you want to do is have fun making a city without worrying about the expense etc. Which brings us too...

Skylines has full modding support :D You can create your own parks, modify existing game assets (make them cheaper, change colours, add assets into it like swings, trees, billboards, all-sorts) and use a map editor to build your own map from scratch (or using height map images), and those are just in-game stuff. You can create your own 3D assets if you have the ability, and if you dont then you can download the ones you like straight from the Steam Workshop, this includes 100% user generated content, in-game modifications... theres an awful lot.
Heres a link to a small comp the developers did, I think there was 1wk notice for ppl to make a new building model, and plenty look professional enough to be included in the game:

I'd be very surprised if we saw a better city builder in the next 2-5yrs to be honest, and if we do, we'll be very lucky.

Cheers for the information.
It's my Birthday, so I think I'll treat myself when this is available.

Do you guys usually buy from steam, or 'popular' key sites?

Happy Birthday :D

GMG has it the cheapest i think, in terms of 100% legit and hassle free.
http://www.greenmangaming.com/vip/ (discounts dont apply, already included)
Not sure when they change the VIP selection.

Alternatives are the usual key sites. I did see that Kinguin had it at £16 too, but it was marginally less than GMG, probably the same once it spots your in the UK and adds local VAT.

Nuuvem is the cheap alternative, a completely legit Brazilian site, but they've put a region restriction on, so you need a proxy to bypass it. The key will work, but is it worth the hassle? £16-17 for the Deluxe, about £12-13 for the standard.

GMG seems to simple hassle free choice.

cities skylines has low,med and high density right?

In the older sim city games they just expanded on their own as the land value became worth more? which sounds like a preferable option to me.

No, only 2. The different zoning types are:

Residential - Low & High
Commercial - Low & High
Industrial - Regular/Dirty, Oil, Ore, Farming, Forestry & Office

Oil, Ore, Farming & Forestry are technically still 'industry' rather than a specific zoneable, based on ground resources & district settings, while 'Industrial' & 'Office' are the 2 zoneable types.

I think theres 5 land value types too, not entirely sure if that comes with its own new building, or whether its just an indicator and theres 3 visual differences and 2 mid-way visualisations in gradient on the land value view.

Think someone dropped the ball on that one. Wher are the dev team located?
